The Big Gundown is another little known Van Cleef Italian classic

"There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats" ...  Albert Schweitzer

Phantom Stranger

Todays recommendation are two film that have to be watched together.  Now lets return to those thrilling dsys of yesteryear. ...

'The Lone Ranger' (1956)
&
'The Lone Ranger And The Lost City Of. Gold' (1958)
-Clayton Moore, Jay Silverheels

Two feature lenth films based on the classic TV series.  Both films are good old fashioned western adventures.
Plenty of action, entertaining stories and you can easily tell the good guys from the bad (if only real life were that simple)
Now I had nothing against the recent Ranger film, it was ...ok, and it was a hell of a lot better than the early '80's film
but This is the one true Lone Ranger and Tonto for many of us old timers .

The big problem with the 1980's Lone Ranger, was they got an actor to play the Lone Ranger who couldn't act.  the problem with the new Lone Ranger is they had a Lone Ranger who could act-like a complete doofis.  And there was the added benefit of Johnny Depp reprising Jack Sparrow who was trying to hide from authorities by pretending to be a Native American.
What ever happened to my Transylvania Twist?

Phantom Stranger

You are absolutely correct Haunted Hearse. Klinton Spilsbury. (Legend Of The Lone Ranger 1981) had never acted before he landed the Ranger role, and the fact that he has vanished off the face of the earth since then, shows how bad he was. As for Arnie Hammer (Lone Ranger 2012) he was ok and he looked the part, but the attempts at humor fell mostly flat. It's a shame, had the director and screenwriter treated the characters more seriously and respectfully we might have a new classic to watch and a return of a great movie hero.

RAGMAN

Outside of the obvious Wayne/Eastwood entries that run rampant in this thread already, I'll toss DEADWOOD into the pot. EXCEPTIONAL writing AND acting. Kicks a lot of the genre's films, old and new, right square in their arse.

Here's a couple that haven't been mentioned yet: Seraphim Falls with Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson, and Will Penny (one of Charlton Heston's best roles).

Mord

No Country For Old Men (modern western)

No Country awesome movie

I liked Pale Rider.

I like anything with Lee Van Cleef in it.

Lunkenstein

Lee Van Cleef was great. In addition to his films, I always enjoyed seeing him turn up on TV westerns like THE RIFLEMAN and HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL.

I was at Half Price Books the other day and happened across "Creepy Cowboys: Four Weird Westerns", DVD set.  The four films are
: Tombstone Canyon, Vanishing Riders, Wild Horse Phantom and The Rawhide Terror. While I won't argue that these are the greatest Westerns they are fun in the manner they combine cowboys and the supernatural. As you probably guessed from my name, this is a subject near and dear to my heart!  For the four bucks the set cost me I don't think I went wrong. The Vanishing Riders features skeleton wearing cowboys on skeleton wearing horses ( a photo from this film appeared on the Halloween Costumes thread elsewhere on this site)! How cool is that?

Legend has it on the set of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly the actors were having a contest to determine who could draw the fastest.  Eastwood was reportedly very fast.  But Van Cleef was faster.
