The same blemish can be found on the top right corner of the box too. Weird. Maybe it's as ZombieHorror has noted - they just crossed out pre-production labeling and re-stamped the box with whatever monster glass they put in there?

It's redrawn, with ragged clothes, but it's definitely a rip-off.

Could be but it was an image/pose seen in stills from the film!  Could be both artists just had the same inspiration/source material; Anchor's image definitely captured Lon's Wolman but I assume the other purposely missed that mark!

Looks like it was printed "Wolf Man" in the same color ink as the rest of the box, then they crossed that out and stamped "Mummy" in a different-colored ink.  I'm thinking they ran out of Mummy boxes and re-purposed a Wolf Man box.

So maybe there is a differently-printed box for each character.  It would make sense for them to be boxed this way.

Someone said the glasses were given out as premiums at gas stations, etc.

"This week we are giving away Dracula.  Next week we will have The Creature", etc.

I tend to agree with you.... I only suggested that the shipping boxes came with a mixed lot of glasses because the person who I spoke with claims to have sold an empty Anchor Hocking case a few years ago. He said it was full at one point. He said the box had a mixed assortment with most of them being Frankenstein. He said that the Creature was the fewest in the box. Who knows though.... he may have purchased the box from someone who had mixed the case themselves....

That's what I've always heard, but I've never heard from anyone who said they got one that way.

Me too.

I've heard from several sources that they "heard" they were gas station premiums - but never from anyone who acquired a glass that way.

Since I have never heard anyone declare that they were definitely not premiums, or that they got theirs brand new from a retail store, I included them in the "FREE MONSTERS" thread.

No one has ever objected to the generally accepted hearsay.

Wish we could find a poster or some other promotional material to support the story.

I do think that seeing a case of 3 dozen glasses devoted to one character tends to support the myth.  Why would retailers not demand assortments for their store shelves?

Very true!  But who is to say that the box is not nearly full?   :)

Rain Man...who else :)

They made four different shipping cases, each picturing a different monster. I know i have seen all four. I have a Mummy shipping case myself. The full cases I have seen were either all of one type glass, or an assortment, assuming they came both ways. The Midwest seems to be a hot bed for these glasses. I have seen a couple of full cases and countless individual glasses over the years.

In thinking about it a little more, the one case I saw that was an assortment of glasses, but someone could have repacked it. It seems more likely that out of the factory, it would be more efficient to pack them all the same in a box. If they were gas giveaways, they must have been seen as "crap glasses". Well, maybe not as desirable to Mom as Esso gas Tiger glasses.

Thanks Bob for the info. That about settles the packaging mystery, but what about the distribution of these glasses? Were they sold at gas stations as is widely reported, or were these found in department stores?

That was me that told you they were gas station giveaways, but I was only operating on hearsay. I tended to give it credence because I had read it from several sources. Might just be myth, who knows?

BTW, what's with the "COLLECT ALL SIX"? Weren't there just Creature, Frankenstein, Mummy, and Wolfman?  ???

I was just yakking. I couldn't remember how many there were.

I collect only Frankenstein, so I tend to forget what makes up a complete set of any thing.
