So it's the 1st day of 2014! Everybody is hanging their new 2014 calendars! NOT ME! I'm hanging my 1996 MARVEL COMICS CALENDAR cause the dates match up for 2014! How bout that! Ha!

This is the Hallmark calendar with key comic covers for each month. Hallmark used two of my comics in it....Fantastic Four #4 and Avengers #4 (it got the December slot). I was at work during the photo shoot at Hallmark. My wife took the comics down. Hallmark accepted my wishes for the shoot...only the wife touches the comics, and she wears gloves at all times. She said everyone thought it was abit weird, but they went along with it.  Had to give her a course in how to hold a comic of value before she could go. Ha! Seems ridiculous now, but I was dead serious back then. Loved my funny books!

Nice Bud, I don't blame you, I once had another dealer ding one of my tuff football cards "handling" before a low ball offer, never again...>:(

What's ridiculous about making sure your collectibles aren't damaged.  When I lived on Carroll Ave. in LA, one of our neighbors had his house in a film, the film makers broke on of his Matching shades on an authentic Victorian Gas Electric fixture, and they replaced it with a non matching shade.  He found out about it, after it was too late to do anything about it.
What ever happened to my Transylvania Twist?

The problem with a calendar like that is, you can't scribble appointments and birthdays on it.  ;D

What's the history behind your connection with Hallmark? How did they come to you for comic covers?

Those look awesome! I love the Fantastic Four and Submariner! (I hate that boy scout Captain America though....)

:)

Do you remember what grade they got from CGC when you shipped them off to be auctioned by Heritage?  Did you keep any scans of your most prized comics?

Well, Hallmark's main offices are in Kansas City...so I was close. Also I was somewhat known there. After graduating Kansas University with a sculpture degree their hiring reps had come to me..... almost became a Christmas ornament sculptor....but that's another story.

Bigbud I too like to recycle calendars( if possible). Ok, I gotta ask the question and I just know there are gonna be many varied responses...serious and humorous so here goes:

How DO you hold a comic of value? I am curious to know.

Ok folks. Go and post your answers and uh also one from Bigbud as well. I'll hum a few bars in the meantime....

Thanks! I knew there had to be a logical back story.

The funny answer and the serious answer are the same. Carefully! If you don't know what that means, you probably shouldn't be touching them.  ;)

Well..I have big hands, so things are easier.....my main concern is oils from the fingers and cradled in the hands in a way that allows for now pressure on the spine. Don't know how many FF 1s and Amazing Spidey 1s I've seen where fingers have ruined the covers.....a lot to do also with the ink used on those issues. Also much care needs be taken when removing and replacing comics in mylars. I traded off a great Dective #32.... went back later to buy it back from the guy and he had shaved a sliver off the spine putting it back in mylar. That squashed the deal...period.

Mylar always kinda spooked me, I've yet to remove my Dell Creature comic from it!

bigbud

jimm, for several years one of the major Mylar manufacturers had a Mylar sleeve that was beaded at the top...no sharp edge. They disappeared...probably cause they were alittle more expensive. They were a great product.

I prefer the thin mylar bags with acid-free boards. You get the clarity and inert longevity of mylar with the ease of use like a regular comic bag. Bill Cole sells them as Ark-Lites. You don't have to replace them every few years, and they don't morph into the "yellowing yuck" that poly-bags do. I use very small labels to secure the flap because if you use tape it's a beyotch to remove.
ALWAYS MONSTERING...

Hepcat

Yes! I use the Arklites as well! Try the Removable Scotch Tape on the bags though. It peels off easily and there's never the danger of damaging a piece of your comic's cover with the tape!
