I lived right across the street in 1977-79 from the down in the dumps Hotel Isabella which basically functioned as a tavern. It had a charm of its own and attracted an eclectic client base of the neighbourhood rummies and various iconoclasts to whom slumming was a political statement of sorts. Former Ottawa Rough Rider and Toronto Argonaut defensive lineman Rudy Sims was the cook:

I liked to stop in on occasion for a bite to eat even though the food was only so-so. I guess I was one of the iconoclasts because the atmosphere at the Isabella just felt so right to me.

In an effort to broaden the Isabella's market, the punk band The Ugly was booked for an evening in 1978:

The Ugly - Stranded In The Laneway/To Have Some Fun

They drew a big crowd and the Isabella succeeded in enlarging its market to include music lovers with esoteric tastes and inexpensive stereos.

What can I say about the band Death? Death certainly influenced up-and-coming punk rock bands. Including,  Bad
Brains.

  • Either he's dead or my watch has stopped!
Thought along the same lines... They're really Goth or New Wave, but it's all Punk at least at first:
Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead (Original)

...but also Heavy Metal New Wave Goth... One of my favorites for Heavy Metal BLUE CHEER!!
Blue Cheer : Doctor Please

This ain't such a favorite but immediately came to mind for New Wave; I could easily switch it up:
Thompson Twins - "Doctor Doctor"

Which of course lead to my choice for Goth...
Marilyn Manson - The Beautiful People

I rather like the Thompson Twins and a lot of other New Wave bands. One of my favourite New Wave tunes was by the Talking Heads:

Talking Heads - Psycho Killer

I've always loved their circa 1960 look on that LP cover! It was just so right for a punk band.

Here's a couple of my favourite Lou Reed tunes:

Lou Reed ''vicious''

Lou Reed - Perfect Day

I LOVE early HC punk. 30 years old and still one of the best 45's I ever bought. It's hard/blistering and to the point and very cool from a bunch of teenage kids fed up with it all.

ANTIDOTE - Thou Shalt Not Kill EP (1983)

One of my top ten fave punk songs ever. Sometimes ya just gotta dream after long haul of real world crap.

Another old school death/thrash bands I'm revisiting. Imagine 53 Y.O tattooed guy with this cranked in traffic after a bad day at work at a stop light slamming the dash and singing along. I'll never go down quietly.

Exodus - As It Was, As It Soon Shall Be

No punk band did a better job of returning rock music to its top forty hit single roots than did Blondie:

Blondie - Denis

Blondie - One way or another

Blondie - Dreaming

Blondie - Sunday Girl 1979

Blondie - Atomic
