I've thought about doing this several times over the years.  I thought it would be cool to do a trophy like the Aurora award:

The twist with our trophy would be that the Peanut Butter Cup would actually be edible.

Wait, what? They're NOT edible?

I wish we could call the award the UMA  "ZOLARR".  It sounds very sleek and futuristic,  and would be a grand tribute to a man who was also a Fine ARTIST and designer.

Which the award-winner could then enter in next year's contest, and win another award!

I've been following along with this thread, and absolutely LOVE the idea of annual UMA awards! I had a few thoughts:

  • Cost. Would some sort of crowdfunding be an option for helping to cover the costs of creating the actual awards and any costs that might come up as a result of creating an annual UMA awards "program"? I don't know what kind of rewards or incentives could be offered off the top of my head (the idea of potential nominees donating their own artwork/products as rewards might not necessarily be the best idea as we'd want the crowdfunding campaign to appear as neutral as possible), but if there are any UMA t-shirts floating around somewhere or something like that, that might work! Kickstarter's rules are that rewards need to be somehow related to or created by the people behind the Kickstarter campaign, and I'm sure there are plenty of non-eligible-for-the-UMA-award-creative types around here that might be interested in getting involved!
  • Social media/internet awareness. I would gladly dedicate a portion of my Monster Kid Radio podcast to host official announcements about the awards (announcing nominees, playing and producing promotional ads for the awards, etc), creating awareness on Facebook and other parts of the podosphere/blogosphere/etc. Having a live awards ceremony somewhere would be amazing, but not everyone can travel, so I'd be happy to host interviews with winners or spotlight voting categories or anything else we can think of on my podcast!
  • Voting. Paying for votes seems like a really good way to keep the voting numbers down. Not only would this discourage casting a wider net for a larger voting pool, but it could also turn into a administrative headache for those collecting votes/money. Instead, why not set up a form through Google Docs? When I was producing the Mail Order Zombie podcast, I ran a yearly awards show, and the final three years of that, I collected the votes through a Form through Google Docs. I stressed that only entries with a valid email address would be accepted, and this allowed me to cut down on people voting more than once (I'm sure there were people with multiple email addresses voting every year, but you're going to find people gaming the system no matter how you do it). I'd volunteer to help create the Google docs form and tally the votes.
I podcast, therefore I am . . .
