Jalacy Hawkins (July 18, 1929, Cleveland, Ohio – February 12, 2000, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France), best known as Screamin' Jay Hawkins was an American musician, singer, and actor. Famed chiefly for his powerful, operatic vocal delivery and wildly theatrical performances of songs such as "I Put a Spell on You", Hawkins sometimes used macabre props onstage, making him one of the few early shock rockers.

I'm not sure what they mean by a "shock rocker", but SJH sure wasn't one. There was nothing shocking or scary about a Screamin' Jay performance- it was all camp and laughs to a 50s voodoo rock and roll beat. We were laughing, screaming, and falling over each through the whole show, and he loved it.

I had the good fortune to see him live.  I was an extra in a movie called "American Hot Wax", and he was one of the actual performers hired to recreate an early show at the Paramount Theatre in New York.  Since it was folmed in LA, they dressed up the Wiltern Theatre to stand in for the Paramount.  This was the 1970's, and he was still in great form.

Shock rocker or not, he was great - especially when you compare him to today's middle-of-the-road dance pop performers.

Thank you, for that comment.  I was just commenting to someone on the subject of today's pop music.
