Wow - That's a great price for 8 films.  I didn't know that the big set could be bought in "Volumes".

I really wanted HOLD THAT GHOST, so it was a good compromise for the price. Volume 3 sounds good too, but I can wait for a sale!

Be careful what you're buying! There's a new "The Best of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello: Volume 1" (2012), but there's also an old V1, 2, 3, etc. that are the old DVD18s (2004-5 era). So far, only the first volume of the new ones has been released. I'm gonna pop on the big box. It's probably as cheap as it's going to get.

If they turn out to be crap quality, I'll have my buddy dupe 'em and I'll return 'em.

Vol. 1 looks to be the release from 10/02/2012 so you should be ok!  Vol. 2 & 3 are from 10/06/2009, so as Mike mentioned those are probably the shoddy sets!

Hmmm....was looking at a review for this collection and noticed this info, In 2004 Universal released 4 packages, entitled the 'Franchise Collection', with all but one of the films ("It Ain't Hay").......Another issue was that the 'Franchise collection' were dual-sided and dual-layered (DVD18) and not 100% compatible with all DVD players and on many that were able to play them experienced intermittent problems.  So that would leave me to believe that the 2009 discs would be ok as well!?  Also, It Ain't Hay (1943), should be part of Vol. 2 but it isn't listed as being part of the 10/06/2009 release!

Here's dvdbeavers review of the set http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews42/abbott_costello_complete_universal.htm  I think I'll be hinting at this as a Father's Day present!!

The print quality is good, it's just that people have problems getting some of the DVD18s to play (skipping and freezing, mostly).  It's the same as the monsters Legacy Collection discs.

For the record, Walmart had two versions of A&C Vol. 1- One in a black DVD case with slip cover, one in a clear DVD case. I opted for the black box.

THE BLACK BOX CONTAINS 4 ONE-SIDED DVDs WITH TWO FILMS ON EACH DISC. I am in the middle of "Ghost" and quality is very nice.

That's what you want.  The DVD18 volumes have two double sided discs.

I frigging hate flip siders.  Inevitably one side ends up trashed.  I'd rather pay extra for more discs.

Me too, but sometimes that's the only thing available. They used to make those flippers with a FS on one side and the WS on the other. Thank goodness they don't do those anymore.

Got my A&C Box the other day.  Don't know why they made the box 2 in. wider (or deeper, I guess) than it needed to be? Some pointless design thing, I guess?

I hate when they get creative with the box's overall dimensions.  Don't these people have DVD shelving in their own homes?

The people that put out the Simpsons series collections decided to put out boxes (too big) in the shapes of the characters' heads.  The fan reaction was so negative that they had to offer regular box replacements to previous buyers.  Series sets after that were released in both box options.  You had to be careful that you were ordering the one you wanted from Amazon.

The original "Evil Dead" DVD was offered in a simulated Book of the Dead holder.  It looks kinda cool, but is a pain in the butt to store with the other DVD's.

I love stuff like that, but it's just not practical. I've long ago run out of space to display fancy DVD boxes. It's hard enough to find space for regular DVDs!
