I'm really happy that these MST3K volumes are coming out more frequently now. I've picked up the last few from Shout! Factory and they really do an excellent job with these DVDs. The discs themselves have really cool bonus features and cool animated menus. Any fan of MST3K should pick these up.

It's too bad all the cut footage from Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie has "disappeared." While their riffing of This Island Earth upset a lot of that film's fans, I thought it was tastefully done, and very funny. Rhino's DVD releases of MST3K were good, but Shout! Factory has really gone the extra mile. Hopefully, some day, they'll get the clearances for the Godzilla films, as well as The Amazing Colossal Man and War of the Colossal Beast.

I really enjoyed MST3K: The Movie. While I am usually not a fan of editing films, I understand that there would be some more time dedicated to the characters of the show. I mean, it is their movie. I have been wanting to see the Godzilla episodes but we'll see if that ever happens.

Actually, Godzilla vs. Megalon was commercially released on DVD by Rhino Entertainment as part of "The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection: Volume 10," a 4-DVD set with Swamp Diamonds, Teen-Age Strangler and The Giant Spider Invasion. This episode was considered by many as unlikely to ever be released due to the perceived rights issues with the Godzilla films, and when Collection 10 was discontinued shortly after release the inclusion of this movie was the cause, borne out by the fact that Volume 10 Version Two is identical save for the replacement of this movie with The Giant Gila Monster. The DVD includes a Photo Gallery, featuring behind the scenes and cast/crew images from all eras of the show. As it so happens, I was sent screener copies of Vol. 10, which included Godzilla vs. Megalon, but they were generic, white-label screeners. People who ordered The Giant Gila Monster replacement disk were actually instructed to THROW OUT the Godzilla disk, in an all-new introduction featuring Joel, Trace, and Frank.

WOW!!!! I can't believe that! I would at least tell the fans that they have a cool collector's disc that no one else is going to get...but to tell everyone to throw them out?

Now, is the problem with the Godzilla films with Toho or is it the fact that the films were distributed by so many different companies under so many different names here in the U.S.?

Toho. In fact, when MST3K did their "Summer Blockbuster Review" special in 1998 for Sci-Fi Channel, using public domain footage from electronic press kits to mock as-yet-unreleased summer movies, Toho threatened to sue them if they did 1998's American "Godzilla"!
By the way, it was the two "Summer Blockbuster Review" and one Academy Awards specials that led to the birth of Rifftrax, according to Bill Corbett. People loved the riffing on current releases, and Mike Nelson figured out a way to do commentary tracks that people could download as MP3 files, then sync with the films' DVDs.

Holy crap! I didn't even realize that Toho cared that much about the abortion that is the American Godzilla.

Very cool. I love Rifftrax as well. While I love all of them, Mike, Kevin, & Bill were always my favorites.

Count_Zirock

I don't think they cared, they just wanted to hassle the MST3K crew for their past riffings of "Godzilla vs. Megalon" and "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster." When Sci-Fi Channel premiered the restored cut of "Destroy All Monsters," Toho made them sign a contract saying it would not be altered in any way, shape, or form. Originally, they wanted SFC to show it commercial-free!

As much as I would love Destroy All Monsters commercial-free, I realize that that is just a little bit ridiculous. Are the Godzilla eps of MST3K available on VHS?

No. Well, not licensed. There are tape-trading forums, however...
