Nice REMCO find! :)

Yes, I've seen these go for quite a bit in the box like that.

Got these from a friend at the local flea market.

That's a good friend!

Oh yeah, I wonder why that never happened? He seemed so determined about it.

I never thought the game would see the light of day. I would have been surprised if it had. Spending thousands of dollars on a sealed vintage game just to open it up and see how the pieces were packed at the factory does not seem like the action of a shrewd businessman.

You couldn't just look at an opened one and make a pretty good guess? Did opening a sealed one produce any shocking revelations? It seemed like a stunt to prove the person had the money to satisfy his whims. He did it because he could.

If it was a publicity stunt, to generate interest in the product, congratulations on a marketing success. For just a few thousand bucks, he got a few dozen people mildly interested in it for a few days.

Back on planet earth, an official reissue of that particular game did not make a lot of sense. It would have required licensing and approval from Universal. The market for such a niche item is very small. An exact replica, fully licensed, would have been a money loser. That is, if it even made it past Universal's style guide department. I'm sure they would insist on a yellow frog throat for the Creature, plus some garish modern logos plastered all over the box. The game pieces would probably have to be made larger to meet modern safety standards. But at least they would all be packed in the box exactly the same way as the original.

Beyond its appeal as a replica, the game did not have much to offer in play value. Those mystery games were fun for a half hour if you were 5 years old. I don't know if the plan was to put the reissue game in mainstream stores. I can't imagine it selling at Toys 'r Us or Walmart. It would be a Monsters In Motion online item and would sell several dozen units. Probably not enough to pay for the licensing fee.

As you can see, I was a big supporter of this game.

I assumed he bought the game to scan all the parts and pieces to make the repro.

I had kinda forgotten the part about it being sealed. The weird thing about that is the Monster Mystery Games didn't ship to retail sealed. The inner tray with the perforated sheet of pawns and loose wooden tokens are sealed, but the that's it, no outside wrap.

So, unsealing one is actually restoring it to it's original condition. ;D

Scored a couple more Rat Fink charms to add to my Monster Vending collection.  :)

These are the ones with painted eyes.

I still want to get a red one with painted eyes like I had as a kid, and one with "whiskers", then I will probably be satisfied as far as the RF charms go... or not.

I picked up this set of Diener Monsters.

I've been meaning to get these for awhile. I pulled the trigger on this set because the seller also had a Best Plastic Corp. Triceratops that I needed, and I messaged him and worked out a deal. Also, I really like the whole set being the same color, and brown brings out the sculpt details better than the bright colors.

Scored another vending machine display card. This one has rubber monsters and bugs.

When I was a kid I loved to buy these rubber creatures from gumball machines. If you were really lucky you got a rubber monster or devil, but usually you just got a gumball. I dropped a crapload of nickels in those machines. It was one of the fun things about growing up a Monsterkid.  :)

Finally scored some Martian Finks at a pretty good price. These showed up today.

Very cool score. I had a barber years ago that had tons of junk piled in the back of his shop. During one of my visits I had to use the restroom in the back, and when I walked back there he had four, big ol', gumball vending machines sitting in a heap of junk. They had these kinds of rubbery monster figures in them. He was a really nice old Italian barber, and when I came back to the chair, I asked him if he'd sell me the machines...to name his price. He knew I was a toy collector too. To my surprise, he would not part with the machines, and didn't really even want to discuss it, which I didn't really understand since he no longer used them in his shop anymore.
