This complete set of Monster Superballs arrived today. I only needed one to complete the set but I jumped on this since it was so cheap on a Buy-It-Now. The seller even had a Make Offer but I knew if I messed with that someone would just buy it.

I can't believe how cheap the asking prices for these things are considering how expensive similar '60s monster vending items are. I display mine on one of my monster shelves setting on upturned water bottle lids. They look like little crystal balls containing distorted images of monsters. Too cool.  8)

I don't believe that any member has actually confirmed that these were sold in vending machines.

Yes, good ole evilBay. Darn good deal, too. It seems like I get lucky when I have project planned. It happened with the custom Monster Playset, and now it's happening with the custom Haunted Hulk.  :)

Well, we ruled out mail order since we couldn't find any ads for them, Warren or otherwise. I guess it's possible they could have been a rack toy but it seems far more likely they were sold in the big quarter vending machines. These things just scream vending machine to me, although I can't specifically remember buying any back in the '60s. They have to be '60s since they were made in Japan. Maybe some monsterpeeps will chime in with some definite memories about them and how they were sold. I just know they look cool as hell and I can't believe I got them so cheap. Hell, flicker rings sell for $50-$150 apiece and these monster superballs look nearly as cool and seem just as scarce, if not scarcer.

Looks like a couple of different ones in this lot.

http://www.retroist.com/2012/10/08/super-balls-with-monster-images/
Yeah, those six two-sided image cards are all I've been able to find. There are 24 different variations though. Each image card has two different sizes, and the cards are turned one of two ways inside the superball which distinguishes which monster will be magnified.

If that tube in the Hakes info originally held the superballs then they could have been a rack toy as well, but it seems very likely these were probably sold in the big quarter vending machines back in the '60s, and maybe into the '70s.

I think I need a video to figure out how these work.

It is a little confusing unless you can hold them and look at them. It becomes very simple after you first "get it" (kinda like posting pictures on UMA ). There are really only six different two sided monster cards, so if you have those six you could be said to have a complete set. And then there are variations regarding the size of the image cards and their facing in the ball- 24 total variations.

The two Hakes pictures are of the same set of 6 balls- from both sides. The two eBay pictures I posted above are of the same set of 6 balls- from both sides.

I didn't even know about these things up until a few months ago and now I've found another old monster item(s) to really appreciate.  :)

"Those little figures"? You don't recognize them? We've been beating the subject of those little figures pretty near to death on this board.

How big are those? They look really big, but it might be a perspective thing.

I like the Vincent Price! What movie is that from?
