I've been BUSY completely reorganizing my monster collection, and I also bought a new digital camera. I found lots of things stored away that I had forgotten I owned, and some I don't even remember buying! One of the little monsters I found at the bottom of a box was this five headed serpent with bendy necks. I know I had it as a kid, so it's probably a relic of the early to mid 1970's. It doesn't have any markings on it except for Made in Hong Kong. Anybody recognize this beasty or know anything about its origins?

it's from a series of 6 figures from a countertop display box that said simply "Monsters." from the late 60s or 70s.  the molds have been reused a number of times, including most recently by the archie mcphee company.  here is an old photo of my collection of them.  i have since gotten the hydra you have as well as a vintage harpy.

the top 3 and the cerebus (bottom right) are all from the original vintage set.  the reptilian guy on the bottom left is from an 80s/early 90s reissue set and the ape-man on the bottom middle is from the archie mcphee reissue.

Found all of this today for under $10 at our local flea. If anyone has the parts I'm missing for my Remco Frankie, let me know.

Horror101,

I love when that happens! You see something and it jars a memory you didn't even know was still lurking around in your dusty brain. I hope somebody on here can tell us anything about it.

Ya it's kinda nice we have had our family house for close to 25 years and have collected lots of stuff in that time.  Me and my Mom has always loved blow mold stuff especially halloween. There's just no telling what might be there? I keep hoping for a Glenn Strange Candy Bucket or light but i doubt I'm that lucky. lol! here is a very small fraction of some we have.
It's all about the Horror.

Muckmonster,

Thank you so, so much for helping solve the mystery of the bendy hydra! Those other figures are REALLY cool! It looks like they were going for a mythological theme with an ancient urban legend boost. I see Medusa, Cerberus, Sasquatch, Yeti, possibly Quetzalcoatl and (?). You should be awarded a new rank in the UMA just for recognizing that creature and offering up pictures of his brothers and sisters!

MDG,

For God's Sake, man! Don't you watch any horror movies? Taking something like that into your home is the way these things always get started! That was probably some ancient sacrificial altar that is now haunted by the souls of the long sacrificed. Good luck with the flickering lights, the doors slamming themselves and random sharp objects flying around the room.

Apparently, this was part of the set for the musical Dance of The Vampires (though it played at a different theater than where she found it). One of the stagehands was getting ready to throw it out as my sister was loading in, so she stashed it until I came to visit.

The skulls are about 4-5 inches high, not life size. Not home now to measure, but it's about 4 1/2 feet long, and probably 14" high and 12" deep. It needs some touch-up, and she said it was wired inside, but I haven't really had a chance to check it out.

Problem is that it's really heavy, so I have no idea what I'm going to do with it.

Marty,

As collectors, that's usually the last thing we worry about.   With something that cool, you have to find a way to make it work.   ;D
