I've seen enough publicity pictures to think this was a genuine 8X10 photo that has been touched up by the press to make it easier to understand in a smaller newsprint format.

Yeah, somebody drew a gorilla "suit" on the guy.

(Another odd pairing.  "Operation Thunderbolt" was an Israeli documentary about the 1976 hostage rescue at Entebbe.  Not to be confused with the 1978 made-for-TV movie.)

What an odd double bill ...Karloff & a western.

I think this kind of thing happened pretty often.  Some independent producer would made an oddball film, but did not have the money to make two at a time.  That meant it had to be paired with whatever was available.

Mars Attacks the World  &  Road To Reno - Steuben - Hornell, New York - 1938.


"Mars Attacks the World" is a re-edited feature length version of the serial "Flash Gordon Goes to Mars".

"Road To Reno" has nothing to do with Crosby & Hope.  It is the story of a former silent film star trying to make it as an opera singer.  The Reno angle must involve her attempts to shed western actor husband Randolph Scott.

James Dean, walking in the rain, with the Astor Theatre in the background in 1955.  The following year his first major movie, "East of Eden", would open in the Astor.  Seven months after that, when "Rebel Without a Cause" premiered in that same theatre, Dean was already dead.
