Just.added.this.to.my.collection--Carradine.was.trained.as.an.artist.in.his.young.days--pre-acting.years--and.he.always.loved.to.draw.
and.sketch.and.sculpt...As.far.as.I.know,.few.examples.exist.of.his.artwork,.so.I.was.very.happy.to.acquire.this.self-caricature.he.did.
in.1943...Also.got.some.little.photos.of.3.other.caricatures.he.did--and.one.of.his.signed.checks,.also.from.'43.

Very cool, Robert.I didn't realize he was a drawer...

I.met.Carradine.some.years.ago--I.think.it.was.around.1980-81--and.he.mentioned.that.he.studied.under.
the.artist.Daniel.Chester.French.(1850-1931)!...I've.seen.photos.of.Carradine,.publicity-type.things,.posed.
with.pieces.of.sculpture.he.was.supposed.to.be.working.on.at.that.moment...but.never.had.seen.drawings.
until.recently!

Seriously, Robert, I would consider taking your piece to a paper conservator, and consider at least getting the piece deacidified and possibly backed to a non-acid paper. It is a beautiful item and in a good enough state to preserve it, but unfortunately will continue to deteriorate as time passes unless some conservation is done. Here is a guy I can recommend. Not cheap, but the job will be done right, and they can go as far as you want, even replacing the chipping on the edges, but that is up to you. These guys are museum quality. http://www.audubonart.com/restoration.asp

Thanks,.Bob--yes,.I.do.have.some.items.like.this.worked.on--and.this.is.a.good.candidate.

Along.with.the.self-caricature,.I.got.these.items--a.very.nice.signed.check.of.Carradine's.(that.one.corner.is.
stained.with.ink--not.missing)--and.the.3.little.photos.of.sketches--I.think.those.are.pics.of.some.more.of.
Carradine's.artwork...I'm.familiar.with.his.handwriting,.but.not.with.his.printing,.so.am.not.sure.if.that's.his.
notation.on.the.one.stating.it's.a.character.from.MERRY.WIVES.OF.WINDSOR,.but...perhaps...

The.first.two.pics.remind.me.of--hmmm--Hannes.Bok?

Ghoul

Great Piece.  Considering How Deformed John Carradine's Hands Had Become In Later Years From The Arthritis,  It's A Wonder How He Could Even Hold  A Pencil.  I Guess The Later Signatures And Artwork Would Reflect This....

Illoman

Robert, I meant that I agreed with you that is was reminiscent of Bok. That's what I thought when I saw them.

Ghoul--When.I.met.Carradine.in.the.early.1980s,.his.hands.were,.indeed,.by.then.terribly.deformed.with.
arthritis..I.even.hesitated.to.shake.his.hand,.which.he.held.out.to.me--but.he.set.me.at.ease.instantly,.
saying,."Don't.worry.about.hurting.me--there's.no.pain.in.my.hands.now--after.the.disease.got.done.doing.
THIS.to.my.fingers.,.I.don't.have.pain.any.longer.in.them."...He.held.up.his.hands.and.wiggled.his.fingers.
when.he.said.this...But.when.he.did.the.drawings.and.sculptures,.back.in.the.1920s-1940s.era,.his.hand.
were.still.just.fine...I,.too,doubt.he.would.have.been.able.to.draw.much.as.his.hands.became.crippled--but.
he.was.still.able.to.give.me.autographs.in.the.'80s!
