The GI Joe and the mummy's Tomb playset was the focus of a "traumatic" event in my childhood.
I was around 4 years old and we went to the beach. I insisted on bringing my GI Joe, his vehicle, and the mummy with sarcophegus because a beach is just like the desert...just with more water.

So I spent the day playing in the sand and surf. developing a healthy pink glow (this was the early 70's, nobody cared about sunblock every 1/2 hour), until my Mother said it was time to go. I grabbed my GI Joe and his vehicle, but where had I buried the mummy? 45 minutes later I was still frantically digging to no avail.
I remember the car ride home, I felt like my Joe was staring at me with such disappointment. It was as though his glare was shouting "You'll never be an adventure team member now kid. Maybe Barbie has an opening in her club".

Years later I took some comfort in the thought that some lucky kid probably found the sarcophagus and mummy while digging for a sandcastle and it made his day. Of course I don't know this for sure, but believing that helps me sleep.

Many years later they made a modern version with a new Joe and sarcophagus (no vehicle this time) and a friend gave it to me as a gift. It wasn't the same.

Giilfan- You are awesome! That story had me laughing....and not quite crying- but more of a sympathetic "awwwwww". Poor little guy! We all have a "and then I lost my___" story, but yours is so well told. I felt like I was there at the beach, watching a frantic little fellow claw into the sand with all his might. If you ever have dinner at my house, I will tell all my fellow guests NOT to mention the GI Joe sarcophegus! Hahahaha!

Thanks! I also have a heartbreaking tale about the GI Joe submarine, but I'll save that for another day.
