I just had to be the... FIRST MAN INTO SPACE (1959) - I first saw this at one of those great early '60s Saturday Matinee double features. Nice memories.

Good film?

FIRST MAN INTO SPACE (1959) is a fun watch, though I think Marshall Thompson's 2 monster films from the previous year are much better. (FIEND WITHOUT A FACE and IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE)

Death Rider in the House of Vampires~

Glenn's second movie comes just a little over 2 years after the release of his debut feature Verotika so what did he learn from his first venture, if anything, on this second go round?

First off this was always stated as a spaghetti western and while there are moments in Death Rider that feel directly lifted from those gritty 60's flicks the overall feel of the film, much like Verotika, is hardly above the production standards of a porno.

The opening scenes of Death Rider (Devon Sawa) and his topless captive (Tasha Reign) traipsing through the dessert had me feeling like Glenn was really going to pull this homage off but the film was a mixed bag.

As with parts of Verotika, parts of Death Rider drag on for no apparent reason, the opening scenes go on for 10 min; Death Rider walking with his horse bound captive, although this did have a very spaghetti western feel. There is a brief encounter/confrontation between Death Rider and another vampire outlaw too. The opening does give ample time to showcase a new song from Glenn; as with all aspects of the production he created an original soundtrack for the film.

Opening credits role. Did someone play one of the Red Dead video games before designing this montage? The credit sequence is much more cinematic than Verotika's straight to video aesthetic.

The plot then continues; Death Rider seeks sanctuary at Count Holiday's (Julian Sands) vampire establishment (think Titty Twister from From Dusk till Dawn but with much, much less activity) having ulterior motives.

He has various encounters with sexpot Carmilla Joe (Kim Director), airhead Mina Belle (Ashley Wisdom), Kid Vlad (Victor DiMattia), Dracula Cassidy (Eli Roth) and Bad Bathory (Glenn Danzig)

So again, scene to scene is just a roller coaster ride of good/bad dialog, good/bad acting, good/bad editing, good/bad cinematography, etc., etc.

The whole affair leads to a rather lackluster confrontation where the bad guys basically stand there waiting for Death Rider to take them out.

Devon Sawa does a great job as the mysterious-morose stranger (a staple of spaghetti westerns) with the material that he has to work with.

Likewise Julian Sands commands the screen and "chews the scenery" in a relatively underused role.

Kim Director and Victor DiMattia do serviceable work in their parts.

Ashley Wisdom does better here than her role as Dajette in The Albino Spider of Dajette short from Verotika, lucky for her a French accent wasn't required.

Glenn Danzig is such a personality that his appearance here just comes off as Glenn Danzig cosplaying as a vampire gunfighter but he was definitely having fun.

Eli Roth doesn't have a lot of screen time but goddamn you can just tell he was loving every minute of it.

Be on the lookout for Fred Armisen and Lee Ving cameos as well.

FIEND WITHOUT A FACE (1958) - Classic '50s monsters!  Man, they scared the crap outta me as a kid - especially the sounds they made while invisible, but I still loved the film.
