Until the End of the World, 1991 - As a rogue Indian nuclear satellite threatens to disrupt civilization, a woman chases a mysterious scientist, who has a device that can record dreams and play them back in a kind of virtual reality, around the world.  Catching him turns out to be even more stressful than the chase.

Solvveig Tourmeur, Sam Neill, William Hurt, Max von Sydow, Pietro Falcone, Enzo Turrin and Ernie Dingo.  With some interesting unbilled cameos.

The Criterion Collection BLU-Ray gives us the director's full 287 min cut from 2014.  If you saw this in the theater in the U.S., you would have seen the trimmed down 158 min. cut.  Perhaps this version will clear up some of the questions the shorter version did not answer.

Dialog switches very freely between English, French, Italian, Japanese and German - with subtitles to help out.

The movie is admittedly a long slog.  But there are little touches of humor to be found for any who can stay attentive over such a long film.  One of those movies whose appreciation benefits form a second viewing.

I'm glad I finally got to see this one, but I will need a long break before watching it through again.

2050, 2018 -  In the very near future, a not-quite happily married man tries to improve his relationship by secretly employing a sexbot on the side.

David Vaughn, Stormi Maya, Irina Abraham, Dean Cain and Devin Fuller.

Thoughtful exploration of human relationships replaces the usual sci-fi take on Real Doll-styled sex robots of films like Cherry 2000.  No Car chases or fancy explosions fill in for lack of a plot in this one.  Contains a lot of understated humor.

Solid acing by thespians unknown to me bring this one off.  Creative use of lighting covers for the fact that this was a relatively low budget production without calling undue attention to itself.

I was prepared to be very disappointed by this movie.  I was VERY pleasantly surprised.

Recommended.

Sounds like two movies.

A Breath Away, 2018 - Following an earthquake, Paris loses all electrical power and is covered by a deadly, thick gas cloud that hides everything inside it from the lucky few who fled to higher floors.

Romain Duris, Olga Kurylenko, Fantine Harduin, Michel Robin and Anna Gaylor.

Decent acting and good special effects.  Engaging personal story.

In French with English subtitles.

Low budget shows in the unbelievably small number of local survivors.  Stretches belief in just how long your average citizen can hold his breath.  But, overall, a good little movie.

Unusual enough to hold my interest from start to end.

Recommended to viewers who don't mind subtitles.

Mord

 Murder Party (2007...on Netflix)

A few posts ago, I mentioned watching the very worst movie I had ever seen (I don't even remember the title, now). I was wrong. I really don't think I will ever see a worse movie than Murder Party (hopefully). The biggest surprise is that I sat through all 77 minutes. I guess I had taken some Ambien which didn't really put me to sleep, but made reaching for the remote seem like a tremendous task.
A wimpy nerd finds an invitation to a "Murder party" on Halloween night. He dresses up in a homemade, cardboard knight outfit and shows up at the location. Lo and behold the "Murder party" turns out to be as advertised...and he is the victim. The "humor" is banal and oppressive and the acting is worse. I finished the damned thing and now question my sanity. Avoid at all cost, you're welcome.

Mike...In 3-D!

Ah, bummer you didn't like it. I wasn't into it the first time I saw it, but I dug it the second time around.

As for me...

The Turning (2020).

You watched it twice? You deserve a purple star, or something. Btw, how did you like The Turning?

The Turning (2020).

This is "The Turning of the Screw", right?  Sure looks like it from the TV trailers.

Not at all, to be frank. I'm unfamiliar with the source material, so I can't speak to how closely it was adapted, but I feel like I've seen handfuls of other movies do everything this one attempted, but better.

Demons [1985]; This was my introduction to Italian horror. It's cheesy, ridiculous, and loads of fun. Really good gore, kills; and atmosphere. Four chainsaws out of 5 for the demon massacre that includes a dirt bike and a Japanese sword. 4/5. The artwork is cemented in my memories.

Demons 2 [1986]; The artwork for this is also cemented in my memories. Not "really" a sequel to Demons, and more of a re-imagining with a different location. The demon gore and carnage in this is really good tho; enjoyable shocks, atmosphere, and Asia Argento. Four chainsaw out of 5. 4/5. And the music for Demons and Demons 2 is also fun.

Both films are really fantastic. Demons, is by-far my favorite Italian supernatural Horror film.
