Horror of Dracula

My second Hammer film (after The Mummy), and my first Christopher Lee Dracula movie!  I really enjoyed it....     ...I can't wait to watch the others.  And then it's on to Frankenstein!

I see by your profile that you are 27.  All of these films are very familiar and comfortable to me (I will complete my 70th year in mid-October.)

These old films don't seem creaky and laughable to you?

I suppose the old world curse films could seem classic to a youngster today...

Can you stand to watch the 1950's science fiction films at all?  The "science" they portrayed was so obviously hokey to me even when they were brand new - but I love them all the same.  But the I am experiencing nostalgia for a carefree time in my life.

What's your excuse?

Don't wait! See REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN next! I love the FRANKENSTEIN series, mostly because of Cushing (and Terence Fisher's direction).  Also, if you like the Cushing/Lee combo, catch the Hammer version of HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.

Sounds like you have a little time on your hands. That's great, you deserve it. I'm glad you gave Kronos a second chance.

They're movies.  I don't need everything to make sense.  It's all about turning off your brain and having fun.  Considering the type of movie, I thought parts of it were handled very well.

The Sci Fi stuff can be hard to stomach, but I think they watch badly because I get the impression they didn't care if it was good or not. They just wanted to sell some tickets and make a quick buck.  This movie seemed like everyone gave it everything they had, Cushing especially.

My biggest complaints were that the castle was far too new, and they state at the beginning that Harker made a long journey to get there, but the chase at the end had them getting from the Holmwood place to the castle in just a few hours?

I completely agree. I have never liked Sci-Fi. It seems like the science is old by the time the film comes out. Years later, it's laughable & boring (too much time spent on the science aspect and a lot less on the fun fiction part).

I love the sci-fi stuff, personally. I don't know what it is about old sci-fi but I'm extremely forgiving when it comes to the quality of the film. There's just something charming to me about the lack of sense they make.

A Virgin Among The Living Dead (1973) (really Christina, Princess Of Eroticism in it's original form)

Jess Franco was tired of doing work for hire with guys like Harry Alan Towers, so he made some of his own personal films in the early '70s including Christina, Princess Of Eroticism. This film is pure Franco, which is very dreamlike and enigmatic in it's storytelling method. It deals with a girl (Christina von Blanc) who goes to a mysterious valley in France to see a family she never knew she had after getting word of her father's death. The "family" turns out to be phantoms there on a mission from the Queen Of The Night, a mysterious power manifest as a beautiful black haired woman (played by Anne Libert). At film's end Christina is accompanied by the Queen into a shadowy afterlife to join her father (Paul Muller) who hanged himself. Also present are Franco regulars Howard Vernon, Britt Nichols, and Jess himself.

Years later zombie footage was added by Jean Rollin to make the film more marketable during the '80s zombie craze. Thus the film became A Virgin Among The Living Dead. The original Franco version at a little over 79 minutes is the one to see. The zombie footage, and very non-erotic sex footage added later just mucks everything up. Get the Redemption Blu-ray to see a nice copy of the original version. It also has the 90+ minute longer cut for comparison, as well as loads of cool extras if you are a Franco fan.

House Of 1,000 Dolls (1967)

This Harry Alan Towers endeavor is kind of so-so for a film starring Vincent Price. The plot deals with white slavery in Tangiers. Hero George Nader is loud and not overly cool. Maria Rohm is probably the best thing about this sorta Bondish wannabe. The Kino Blu-ray has distorted background noise, the nightclub scenes with audience applause sounds like standing behind a 747 at takeoff. Never had a BD sound this crappy.

Beautiful poster! I really like Franco. If this artwork is any indication of the film itself, it's gotta be a winner.

If you have a taste for Franco you'll like it. Most people either dislike, or downright hate, Franco's work either because so many of his films have been altered so much, or the viewer has no appreciation for surreal imagery and symbolic storytelling. See the original cut on the Redemption BD. It's reasonably priced on Amazon and loaded with special features, as well as both complete cuts of the film. Lots of nudity with high comeliness lasses Christina von Blanc, Anne Libert, and Britt Nichols too.  ;)

Took a break. Had to. Good news though: as it stands right now: no surgery. Doc says I am "mostly better". Yay!

That is excellent news! I'm so glad. I have to have surgery, and I'm not happy about it. Better make out my will. Anything you want?
