Phantom Stranger

'The Thing From Another World' (1951)
-Kenneth Tobey

Plot: Service men, civilians and scientists do battle with a blood thirsty creature from outer space at a remote artic base.

Phantoms Review: This is one of the VERY RARE, occasions when the remake is a little better than the original, but that doesn't take anything away from this excellent 1950's monster movie. Terrific acting, wonderful dialogue and a great sense of foreboding.  The Carpenter remake was able to stay closer to the original story and have better FX, gore and violence, the original keeps the monster in the shadows, and plays up on the tension. Both films are great for their respective eras. Highly enjoyable.  A classic.

Rob Zombie's Halloween - I recently finished watching all the originals (in order) and decided to give this one another chance (maybe I missed something the 1st time). I shouldn't have bothered.

I'm with ya, bro. And some of the kids these days prefer the RZ remakes. Silly young'uns.  ;D

You notice I said "some". There are a few young folks with the intelligence and taste to appreciate what came before.

I hate to admit it, but my very intelligent brother likes the R Zombie crapfests (though, he does prefer the originals).

Hands Of The Ripper (1971)

Good Hammer Horror. The gore quotient is cranked up beyond most Hammer offerings reminding one of a giallo like Deep Red (1975).

Night of the Living Dead, original but it was a colorized version.  I had read up about Legend Films dvd release of some public domain titles (which they present in both b/w and colorized) and it said that there prints were better than most releases of that ilk.  I was going to look for NOTLD and their double feature release of The Last Man on Earth/House on Haunted Hill but then found out you could watch some of their titles on Hulu.  Hulu has both the colorized NOTLD and House on Haunted Hill for anyone interested in checking them out.

Watched the original "Day of the Dead". The alligator walking down the steps of that building (in the beginning) always freaks me out.

Hard to believe it's 40 years old this year (R.I.P. Marilyn Burns).

Nice list Memphremagog, I've been looking for "The Black Scorpion" for a while. Can't find an affordable copy. There's a used one Amazon for about $20, but that's a bit high for one dvd IMO.
