I just finished watching ASSIGNMENT: OUTER SPACE.  1961 - Color - 79 Minutes

"Astronauts on a secret mission to Mars discover that an unstoppable renegade space station is speeding toward Earth on a deadly collision course.  The scientists are faced with a horrific choice - watch helplessly as their planet is destroyed or risk their lives on a million-to-one chance to stop the impact."

It was an okay B-Movie, the quality of the movie production was not too good, the acting was so-so, and the story was so-so.
I watched it on a DVD called "Outer Space Classics" which contained 2 other movies, all for $4.99!  Here is the movie on Youtube, much better quality than my DVD.  Enjoy!

- Dracula Contra Frankenstein on Shilling Shockers

The more I see this, the more I enjoy it. Great classic monster scenes make you overlook the faults. I like that it's in subtitles instead of dubbing. There are long periods of no dialogue, just gothic scenes of vampires and monsters. Plus Penny Dreadful's show is one of my favorites.

- The Ghost on Wolfman Mac's Chiller Drive In

Always enjoy watching Barbara in a crypt.
"For one who has lived but a single lifetime, you are a wise man ...Van Helsing."
"I shall awaken memories of love and crime and death..."

"Treasure Island" (2012)
                         -Eddie Izzard

Plot: IMDB
Young Jim Hawkins is the only one who can sucessfully get a schooner to a legendary Island known for buried Treasure. But aboard the ship is a mysterious cook named John Silver, whose true motivation on the journey challenges Jim's trust in the entire crew.

Phantom's Review: Decent, if a bit overly long version of the Stevenson classic. All the actors do a fine job and it's nice to see a wide range of accents among the pirates, but a four hours the film tends to drag in a few places. Not a very faithful adaptation, but still worth a viewing.

Moonshadow

I was home sick today and so finally watched the 2011 version of The Thing. Why did they even bother to make this movie? There is no new ground covered; it is for the most part a rehash of the Carpenter film. I was hoping they might come up with a new angle -maybe the humans work together better, or multiple "things" besiege the humans, but no, the paranoia and action played out as before. They could have given us more of the aliens, maybe some idea of what their grand plan was -was the spaceship theirs, or were they just stowaways? But nothing new or original here.  I think the Rob Bottin effects were much more effective too.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)

Just watched that one the other night (Saturday), wasn't impressed in the least!  Very boring and pointless in my opinion.  It did have its share of creepy/spooky stuff but in the end didn't add up to much.

Phantom Stranger

"Dark Shadows" (2012)
               -Johnny Depp

Plot: After almost 200 years of sleep, vampire Barnabas Collins reawakens in 1972 to battle the evil (but gorgeous) witch who cursed him, help his descendents rebuild their fortune, find his lost love and generally deal with the strange new world he now finds himself in.

Phantom's Review: First, let me say I love the original "Dark Shadows", been a fan for decades, so when I first heard that Depp and Burton were going to do a film version I got very excited I'm a fan of them and I like their style, but then I saw the first few previews and I saw a comedy not a Gothic Horror movie, but I went and saw it anyway and much to my surprise I loved it. The film does have some comedic moments, but they seem natural since they mostly deal with Barnabas trying to figure out his new world. There are some really decent BOO! scenes, great FX and the film really tries to keep the atmosphere and spirit (no pun intended) of the original show. The whole cast does a great job with their characters. My only main complaint is a late film reveal about the Carolyn character that really goes nowhere and the original "Dark Shadows" music is only barely hinted at in the soundtrack. Outside of that really enjoyed this film.

RedKing

The Black Cat 1934-one of my faves!
Black Star and Golden Bat 1979-this is a very weird South Korean animated film (dubbed into Spanish) about a super villian named Black Star who is kidnapping scientists to make a super weapon. He is opposed by golden Bat a rip off hero who is a combination of the skull faced Japanese hero Gold Bat and Batman. His costume is the same as Batman's but the colors are way different-gold body, blue cape and cowl with red lining, sky blue gloves and black boots and trunks with a red bat insignia on his chest! Golden Bat can fly, has super strength and shoots various rays. The final showdown is very brutal-Golden Bat rips one of Black Star's arms off. Amazing  Asian insanity!
Crazy am I? We'll see if I'm crazy or not!

I would like to stress something that I seem to have accidentally omitted from my original review. While I thoroughly enjoyed this film, I want to say that "Dark Shadows" 2012 is definitely NOT a carbon copy of the original series or movie. This is a different take on the familiar themes. Depp and Burton have taken the essence, the spirit (theirs that pun again) of the original show and put their own spin on it. Some characters are very different from the originals, most notably "Victoria Winters" and "Maggie Evans" and some characters remain true to form. This is a remake after all, and most remakes do some things differently. If you are a die hard purist of the original, you might not like this new take, but if your like me and can enjoy this film on it's own merits I think you'll enjoy it.

Yeah, it really doesn't live up to its reputation.
