Monsters For Sale

Soldier, 1998 - Kurt Russell plays a state-raised and trained soldier who is made obsolete by a new genetically-enhanced model.  Badly wounded and assumed dead, he is dumped on a remote planet that has been designated for refuse disposal, only to revive - and discover he is not alone.

Kurt Russell, Jason Scott Lee, Jason Isaacs, Connie Nielsen, Sean Pertwee, Mark Bringelson and Gary Busey.

Solid comic book plot done in an interesting setting with a better than average cast for such fare.  Russell's portrayal is intense and oddly understated at the same time.  It is a casting choice that rescued a movie that would normally have been spoiled by featuring the likes of Jean Claude Van Damme or Chuck Norris.

I don't know why this film is never talked about.  It must have been released against a blockbuster or neglected by the studio.  The final scene leaves it wide open for a sequel.

I'm glad they never made one.  I think it is just fine as it is - a tight little story with a satisfying resolution.

Wasn't there a similar movie made not long before this one that got all the attention?

Star Trek: Of Gods and Men (2007)

The movie has everything but a plot that makes any sense.

I hate the way time travel has been handled in the Star Trek series since its introduction as a plot device. Come on. Everything one did whether a thousand, fifty or twenty years ago has been fully reflected in the time line since one did it a thousand, fifty or twenty years ago. Whatever one did back then happened back then and it's impact would not be delayed to suddenly take effect at the present time when one got the notion to tinker with something in the past. And logically if it happened, it happened and whatever tinkering one did back then merely ensured that whatever happened will/did happen. In other words, one can't change the past because whatever happened did happen. It's an incontrovertible fact.

I'm...  Kind of amazed that any of those actors did that.

I don't think all the plots are so ridiculous, but i'll have to watch a couple more before I can say. So long as they stay away from time travel which the Star Trek writers absolutely, positively don't know how to handle, they should be fine.

Incidentally, Mort Weisinger the Editor of the Superman titles through the Silver Age was pretty good but not perfect at handling plots involving time travel.
