Castle Freak (1995)

As much as I love the work of Stuart Gordon, Jeffrey Combs, and Barbara Crampton, this flick is a little tough to get through. I'm no stranger to gore, and I like visceral horror and wretchedness in film as much as the next guy, but...this flick just gets downright nasty. It is sober and very depressing. No fun Herbert Westiness here. Stuart Gordon must have been pissed off to the bone, either consciously or subconsciously, when he made this film. I saw it back in the late '90s and was impressed enough by it to buy the DVD. It's very well made and effective at the gross-outs. I applaud the talent, but after watching it I wanted to shower. Barbara Crampton plays the frustrated, overprotective mom, but she's still gorgeous. And, Jeffrey Combs turns in a great performance as the alcoholic guilt-stricken father who inherits a castle complete with crazed degenerate barely-human brother who escapes the dungeon to sexually ravage females with his lipless mouth full of ripping teeth.

Phantom Stranger

'The Smiling Ghost' (1941)
-Wayne Morris

Plot: IMDB
Elinor Bentley Fairchild's previous three grooms-to-be have either died or been maimed. Her aunt hires Lucky Downing to become engaged to her for a month to break the curse. But Lucky becomes a target of what appears to be the ghost of one of the former fiances.
Phantom's Review: Goofy, but entertaining "Old Dark House" style mystery/comedy.
Plenty of slapstick humor, some nice atmospheric scenes, and a couple of decent attempts at actual scares. The plots not very original, but the acting is fine and it moves at a brisk pace. Not a classic, but I enjoyed it.
