Which are your favourite monster flicker rings?

Here are a few pictures from the collection of Toy Ranch:

And here is a picture from the collection of Monolith:

And another one I lifted off the web:

Hard to pick a favorite, I like all the monster flicker rings.
there are also these flicker rings with the Don Post mask photo's on them. I'm not sure how many were made, but I have three of them...
In this photo the Wolf Man on the left changes into the Phantom of the Opera and the Creature on the right changes into Mr. Hyde...

Here are the other images on the same two rings...

And here is the third ring I have, this Mummy turns into the Hunchback...

Were the Don Post flicker rings vending machine premiums as well or were they distributed in some other way, e.g. cereal boxes, FMOF magazine mail-in offer, etc?

???

Creature, frankenstein, and dracula are my favorites. The creature ring is just perfect! I have a full set of mint unused flickers for the monster set. I wish i could track down some vari vue rings to put them into. But i want the original silver rings not the blue plastic ones.
Mirabile dictu,don't you agree?

I never bought any of them when I was kid or anything, so I don't know how they were originally sold. I'm guessing vending machines, but maybe
someone who knows will chime in about that.

I remember them being in vending machines with gumballs. Sometimes you got a ring and a gumball, sometimes you just got the gumball (luck of the draw).

The Don Post mask rings were made with 2 different bases.  One is a chrome plated hard plastic base, and the other is the soft vinyl base in the photos posted. There were 3 rings made like that, and all 3 of them appear in both types.  The hard plastic/chrome plated base ones are a little harder to find.

Although the pictures are from the Don Post calendar, I don't believe the intent was to make rings of the masks, but rather rings of the monsters. Whereas the Vari-Vue monster rings (the set with Casper) were licensed, my guess is that the Don Post rings were made with an effort to skirt licensing, hoping that Don Post would not sue them, and if Universal did, they could say these are pictures of masks.  It's also possible that not even that much thought went into it, and they just grabbed the easiest color monster pics they could find.  At any rate, they are what they are, and what they are is pretty cool.

One thing that Vari-Vue rings have over some of the others is the transition from one image to the other is usually pretty clear. You don't get much "ghosting" of the other image.  This was made by another company (not sure of the name) and it's hard to even get a clear view of either image without interference from the other.  It varies some from ring to ring, but that is pretty much a universal (heh, get it?) issue with these rings.

I believe the hard plastic/chrome base rings were probably mostly sold out of vending machines.  The soft vinyl ones may have been as well, but those were also sold in packages for party prizes, with other assorted flicker rings (same base).  There were also some other monstery flicker rings in that 2nd vinyl base set.  One is a fanged hunchback looking cartoony face ring, and the other is, well, I dunno WHAT it is, but it's kinda cool.

Here's a bad camera phone pic I just took of them.

Also, the "Famous Monsters" rings, that were advertised in Famous Monsters and sold in sets by Captain Company.  These were made by a different company, a company in Japan, and their rings are the worst quality of any flicker rings.  There were 7 in the set sold in FM, but there were actually 9 or 10 rings in the whole set.  They were also sold in vending machines.  I have some of those as well.  Not as nice as the Uni Monster set by any means, but they do have a special kind of cool.  Also in this photo is a vending card from this set.

There are some other various monster flicker rings. None of the others are even mentionable as cool enough to compete for the title of "favorite", but there are a few others out there.

I've never seen the blue bg (Frankenstein pictured) ring before, that must be rare?!
What is the rarer of the red/green bgs? or are they about the same?

Green version of the Universal Monsters and I like the Munsters as well. The Casper rings are cool, but i wish they would have made rings with Spooky and Hot Stuff as well.

The green ones are most common.  The red ones are rare to the level of about 5-10 greens for every red.  The blue ones are rare to find at all.  I still am missing some blue ones, and have been looking for years.

Good! I'm glad you verified that I included all the best rings in the poll.

:)

It's a pity that the Casper and the Munsters rings aren't getting more support though.
