I recently watched a documentary on Detroit's Grande Ballroom on PBS. The Stooges, MC5, Alice Cooper....the list goes on. Did your dad ever go to any of those cool shows?

One of my buddies and his two brothers were shipped off most every summer in the 1960's by his working parents to the Hamtramck neighbourhood of Detroit to be cared for by his uncle and aunt. As such he was in an excellent position to take in shows at the Grande Ballroom. His recollections of the concerts are now distant and he admits that drugs were involved so his impressions may have been thereby altered. But he remembers that the Amboy Dukes were LOUD and that the Stooges weren't up to snuff musically and that their lead singer Iggy Pop was weird. The Frost were the band that he thought were easily the best:

He thought the Frost would be huge. That though was not the way it turned out and Frost records are now very tough to find in used record stores.

Nonetheless the psychedelic concert posters from the Grande Ballroom shows rendered by Gary Grimshaw and Carl Lundgren are among the most highly prized and collected rock concert posters of them all these days:

The Who, Pink Floyd, and Fleetwood Mac (when they were good)? What a line-up! I bet the tickets were well under 5 bucks. Small venue, too.

Yes. It boggles the mind now. A price to see all three of those great bands in concert that was only $1.00 higher than the price of their LPs.

Watch Ronnie Wood and Alice Cooper discuss Detroit rock n roll and the Grande. Two legends, so fun.

Okay.....hmmmmmm.

Maybe some Dark Wave bands

Alien Sex Fiend
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Bfm7cOJfOj
Sex Gang Children
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JiWWjbCqkaE
Thrill Kill Kult
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uN0yI-ambNY
Bauhaus
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nnrG904talA

Ha, we keep taking a detour toward Detroit rock city on this thread. Well, since that usually includes MC5 and the Stooges we can sort of justify it  ;)

I'll try to keep focus from now on, lol.

Great selections. Never heard of Sex Gang Children before this post. Thanks for reference.

I know most of us on this thread are old school, but there are some really good contemporary dark wave and death pop groups out now. I've mentioned these acts before. The dudes on this thread know their music, so I wouldn't recommend groups lightly. Here are a few examples you may enjoy. Let me know what you think.

Cold Cave: Confetti

Vowws: One or the Other

Drab Majesty: Behind the Wall

Death Valley High: Play Dead

Yeah I remember that song. Def from new wave era. They were a little too radio friendly for me. I like my new wave more misanthropic  :(.
Although I do like Duran Duran and Psychedelic Furs and they were radio friendly---especially DD.

I have gotten away from being a Hard Rock/Metal Nazi and now have a VERY diverse love of music.

LOVE this. ESpecially at sonic levels to piss off my neighbors.

Then on the other spectrum, coming out of left field. Just bought the CD and have been playing it all day long. Mean Mary,Fast Banjo.

Great list. Remember their first single, "Killing an Arab"? Try releasing that today. Total jihad.

I'm not sure whether this one can be classified as pre-punk or not:

I took in a show by ostensibly the Crazy World of Arthur Brown at the Wonderland "Swim and Dance" Pavilion in 1972(?). It was actually more than a bit of a rip-off since it was only Arthur Brown backed up by a group of local musicians who simply jammed the whole time while Arthur Brown performed his theatrics on the stage in front of them. They played Fire but it sounded like the band had rehearsed the track for the first time only that afternoon. It was also standing-room only and it was hot and claustrophobic.
