Great story Hep. Thanks for sharing. I would love to have seen Alice back then. Didn't the infamous "chicken" incident take place at a concert in Ontario?

I've seen a few shows across the River. Saw Kiss in Windsor and Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath) in London for example.

It's interesting you mention Canadian beer. That's a big deal for Detroiters. My dad used to drink Cinci and was disappointed when we moved to San Diego in early 80s and couldn't find Canadian beer there (or Faygo soda pop for that matter).  I moved back to Michigan for my high school and college years, so Labatt Blue is pretty much all i consumed for several years. After college graduation I took a job in Seattle area. It was like deja vu. Now I was the one bummed out I couldn't find Canadian beer (or Faygo). I think now you can find anything anywhere though. We lived in Arizona recently but I don't drink anymore so I never thought to check stores. I know you can get in Faygo in San Diego and LA now.

I'm back in Detroit (this time for good i think) so I can consume all the Faygo, Vernors, and Better Made chips I desire.  :D

Yes, at the Toronto Rock 'n Roll Revival Festival which was held at the University of Toronto's Varsity Stadium in September of 1969. It seems though that it was all somewhat exaggerated:

Chicken Incident - Rolling Stone

I like Frank Zappa's comment "Well, don’t tell anybody (you didn't do it). Everybody loves it. You are the most notorious character of all time now.”

Yes, Cinci Lager Beer! Brewed by Carling Breweries at its Kitchener, Ontario plant along with such better known brands as Red Cap Ale and Black Label Beer:

My father and all the older fellows at the Labatt's plant in London drank IPA:

So full bodied and out of step with today's mainstream preferences that Labatt stopped making it 25 years ago. Sad.

Most of my blues-rock listening buddies in the early 1970's drank 50 Ale but eventually switched to Labatt Blue by the end of the decade. Instead of 50 Ale however, one fellow insisted on drinking Dow Ale (also brewed by Carling):

It made him unique and was thus a mark of distinction.

 ;)

Canadians for generations scoffed at U.S. brews as "water" but since the 1990's or so younger drinkers have blithely embraced the mass-market U.S. knockoffs such as Budweiser and Coors Light now being brewed in Canada. Sad the homogenization of tastes that globalism has wrought.

 :(

I'm back in Detroit (this time for good i think) so I can consume all the Faygo, Vernors, and Better Made chips I desire.

My father's older brother and thus my uncle lived in Detroit. As a result we visited Detroit once or twice per year throughout my formative years until I finished school and moved to Toronto in 1977. As a result my Canada has always included Detroit (and now Buffalo as well). As a kid Detroit to me represented all the American big city "sophistication" that my home town of London (with it's population of 162,000 in the mid-1960's and 395,000 now) lacked.

I still remember how delighted I was in the summer of 1964(?) to discover a Faygo pop machine outside the Marathon gas station at Seven Mile Road and Faust Avenue up the block from my uncle's house. It dispensed sixteen ounce Faygo bottles in about a dozen wondrous flavours (including some very exotic rarely found flavours such as rock 'n rye and red pop) for $0.15! And the Seven Mile Hobby Shop where I managed to score a Mad Mad Mad Scientist Laboratory, a Revell "Big Daddy" Roth Brother Rat Fink T-shirt Iron-On and a 1/24 scale Monogram Ferrari slot car kit and then a 1/32 scale "much improved" Monogram Ferrari slot car kit. Detroit was also where I got my first skateboard, a wooden one with steel wheels, at a K-Mart(?) store. Then there was the Broaster House selling fried chicken just down Seven Mile Road near the Southfield Expressway. Wow! Good times.

London had its own small Vernors bottling plant and I still quaff Vernors on a semi-regular basis. Faygo is often "dumped" into Ontario and I still buy it when I find it selling at discount prices in convenience stores.

Better Made chips are available at the convenience store just down the street from my sister's house in London. Uncle Ray's chips are more widely dumped into southwestern Ontario and I frequently buy them because I like the price.

Great stories Hep. You're talking about the west side of Detroit. I don't advise hanging out on that side of town these days (or the east side for that matter)  :o

Downtown totally different these days. Downtown, Mid-Town, and Cork Town very hip now. A lot of development going on. Some hip restaurants and bars---even some retail now. Real estate pricey in those areas. But the residential neighborhoods on the east and west sides of Detroit are pretty dangerous.

My uncle and aunt lived in Highland Park but moved from Highland Park to the Seven Mile Road-Southfield area because of the rapid ongoing decline in Highland Park. As a kid at the time I associated the United States with a culture of modernism and the Seven Mile Road-Southfield neighbourhood looked to me like the kind of spiffy modern neighbourhood I associated with the United States. This continued through the sixties but then the neighbourhood started to decline and by the late 1980's it was pretty sad indeed. But my uncle and aunt passed away well before the turn of the century and I've had no reason to revisit the neighbourhood for over twenty years.

The Clash-Tommy Gun

That's as good as it gets. "Give 'Em Enough Rope" is the hardest hitting Clash album, imo. Sandy Pearlman (Blue Oyster Cult) produced this this with a much appreciated metallic edge. Fantastic album (even sharper on vinyl).

I don't have the record. Today I will but it. Thanks Mord.

I have "The Clash", "Give 'Em Enough Rope", and "London Calling" on vinyl. All three are excellent pressings. I supplement my collection with "The Essential Clash" double cd (for all the great non-lp singles and later material).

It's funny. I'll still mention to people that I'm going downtown for a concert and get funny looks like I'm crazy. I try to tell them downtown is getting built up but the stigma of old downtown is still there.

If you look closely you can see Danzig doing something that resembles...a smile. :o
