I think Nosferatu pre-dates your three classic ones!  ;)

He can qualify as both I suppose since he did appear on screen in 1979 as well as 1922 but for me modern monsters are the ones that are distanced from the classic; Wolfman, Dracula, Frankenstein, Mummy, Creature, etc.

Dr. Madd

Frankenstein's monster
The Mummy
The Golem

Honorable mention:

The Invisible Man, Jason, the Gillman, The Hunchback, Ygor, Jekyll and Hyde
Madd The Impaler-
Undeadlegend

Dr. Madd- The Original- accept no subsitutes.

Unless I'm refering to the 1979 Kinski version. I love that movie and his portrayal. Creepy setting in a real castle.

I see your point ZH, Yes the '22 and '79 Nosferatu are the same character, but I separated them by the actor and year. When Kinski first bit Harker, he was a predator, vicious and creepy. Same when he appeared in the doorway. He is the modern update on Shreck's classic turn.

I'm definitely not knocking your pick; he may be a monster of a by gone age but I wouldn't want to catch up with him in a dark alley even in the modern world!   :D

Narrowing it down to three is tough...

I hear you ZH, your point got me thinking who would I pick as another #3 in the modern arena...it's harder than I thought. Those were the first three I thought of. Maybe the head vamp from 30 Days of Night. He was vicious.
