In terms of land area, Japan is smaller than California.  Any disaster of this size will hit something of that size very seriously.  If you are able, I urge you to contribute in some way to the humanitarian effort.

I read about a year back and hadn't realised until then that Japan itself is made up of over 3000 islands (of which 426 are inhabited). It is no wonder that Japan so often feels the force of nature's awesome power. Listening to the news earlier I heard of the extraordinary efforts the Japanese government go to to minimise the destruction caused by earthquakes, which I can only assume has helped keep the fatalities at a minimum considering the severity of the disaster. My thoughts are with the people.

It's absolutely unbelievable, and horrific. Like something out of a disaster film -only real people are dying and suffering.

I was in the Bay Area during the Loma Prieta quake of 89, and that was nothing compared to this, but I still recall how it felt, how scary it was. My heart goes out to the people of Japan. I am praying there is no more loss of life.

You can easily contribute money to help Japan via the Red Cross - http://www.redcross.org/

Absolutely terrifying... I saw footage on the news of that boat caught in the whirlpool, but they didn't comment on it's fate...anybody know what happened to these unfortunate boaters?

What can I say that hasn't been said?  My heartfelt prayers to those people.

Again, humanitarian aid efforts are underway and can use any donations, even small ones.  Perhaps there is an agency that you deal with and you feel is reputable.  Now is the time to get food, supplies, and assistance to these people.  The photos and video all illustrate how urgent the need is.

Absolutely horrible what these people are going thru. The news gets worse and worse and with the reactors melting down and literally THOUSANDS washed away and hundreds of thousands displaced and in confusion. Basically Hell on earth. I can only feel empathy and hope that the survivors can hang on in any way they can and the situation does not get worse. My wife Kat has been watching ALL day and coming down like 3 X an hour with updates while I am TRYING to read old horror comics. Guess that really don't mean crap now does it. Comics and a few beers while a part of the world collapses. That my friends is TRUE horror. :'( :'( :'(
AAND worldwide including US it is only going to get worse.  Wanna talk 2012 PM me.

Absolutely horrible, but unfortunately I think the worst is yet to happen for Japan if those nuclear reactors meltdown. The footage of the devastation is like all those old monster and disaster movies suddenly came to life. There have been a large number of these huge earthquakes lately-Haiti, Chile, New Zealand and now Japan. I think Lester may be right :-\
Crazy am I? We'll see if I'm crazy or not!

Thousands of bodies are being returned by the sea.

Soon, out of the rubble and toxic soup that covers the land, will come the stench of death - and the disease.

Those poor, poor people.
