Crap, at 17 I was just figuring out which end of the brush to use. Nice stuff!
Re: the Jack Davis copies. In high school I did the posters for our church bazaar. One year I "themed" them based on which Jack Davis caricature I was copying!

Thanks, Chris. Frazetta's covers were my schooling back then. I swear I learned more about the use of color by studying his paperback covers than I did in four years of college!!

Here's one I did when I was 15:

BEAUTIFUL!!  Illoman, I get heart palpitations when I see the words - Illoman & Enlistee's art gallery  together!  You have such an amazing set of eyes and hands  (and other parts, too - I'm sure) and I always feel such joy when I see your artwork. I love those colors so much! And the horse's movement looks amazing! Wow!

Wow, Charpie, you make me blush! Not sure I deserve such nice words, but I appreciate it. I have been a Frazetta fan for ages, and at age 15 didn't know enough not to try to paint like him! These were a blast to paint, and I'm glad my brother still enjoys them. Thanks again!

Since my muse is still eluding me I'll keep dipping into the past, and beg your indulgence.

I've mentioned my adopted Grandmother before. She had this wonderful cast iron dog doorstop. It seemed like every time we visited her he wore a different ribbon around his neck. Once when I was 15, I brought my sketchpad and drew the dog for her. Here's the drawing:

After Grandma passed away my folks ended up with the dog. A couple of years ago he came to live with me, and now proudly stands guard in my studio. I'm not sure how old he is, but here is how he looks today:

And here's a painting I did of Grandma a few years after she passed away. She ended up in a wheel chair after having the lower half of one of her legs amputated.

Illoman

Okay, last one and then I'm going to bed!

I painted this one when I was 25, and Grandma actually got to see this one. I remember showing it to her and as she held it she seemed to choke up a bit and said it "made her feel like  a movie star." One of my happiest artistic memories! My folks had this hanging in their condo for years after she passed away. Looking back I wish I would have chosen a photo with her smiling. She was happy almost all the time. Even after losing her husband and some health issues, she was always smiling and so happy to see us.

Here's an oldie I found looking through my files for something. From a sketchbook done quickly in marker (and touched it up a little yesterday with some white-out). I've always liked drawing faces...it's the rest of design composition and backgrounds that I am not very good at. Ever since I became an inker full-time I never practiced drawing on my own very much. I knew I was never destined to be a penciller. Now it looks like the inking days may be over also. Been looking for a 'normal' job, but it's hard to know what I am qualified for now at 57.

Illoman

Doug, that's great! Very nice, loose sketch!

Thanks! Here's a scan of a color copy of a color marker sketch I did in advance of a store appearance in 1997.

Pheww! A bit of catching up required by me!

Thank you Scatter, Illoman and creaturerevenge regarding my Claude drawing!!

CR! Nice work on the Frankenstein poster! I like the symmetry of the composition with the lightning crashing down the centre towards the blazing windmill. The Nurse from Silent Hill is the stuff of nightmares!

Mike! Many thanks for posting your early art. A great rendition of Frazetta's Silver Warrior. Lovely portraits of your Grandma and great to have them to remember her by! When I was 17 I was either aping Chris Foss spacecraft or copying lumps out of Peanuts strips... with no idea as to what my style was going to be.

curseofthewerewolf! As Illoman said "Awesome"!!! I want your Joker on a t-shirt!

Some new art!

A "Karloff" experiment with a marker pen drawing deliberately prepped for some Photoshop toning.

The original drawing.

With Photoshop fluorescent green.

Back to the acrylics and Hammer's Revenge of Frankenstein.

Illoman

Markchro, *love* the glowing Karloff! It really captures the essence of what happened in the film.

The Cushing is wonderful! I really appreciate your showing us "behind the scenes" as to how you create your great work.
