I think I may have posted this image awhile back, but I just found out yesterday that it will be featured in "Spectrum 18: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art".
This was my "do a Frankenstein" without actually "doing a Frankenstein" if you know what I mean.
It's called "Sap". Charcoal on paper. 20 x 26".

Here's an illustration I did back during my Rocky Horror phase.  I was proud of it then and still am.  I had gotten into really trying to render with cross-hatching based on some pen points I was trying out.  I used it on the envelopes to mail out my little artzine (very 'small press'/fanzine) OZONE.

I wish I could just whip out all kinds of drawings.  I'm good with photo reference and no backgrounds. Backgrounds were ALWAYS a chore to me and kind of an after-thought. Some folks are just gifted with a better natural design sense. It's not like I didn't try to become a better overall artist, but at least my obsessive nature and inking were a pretty good fit.

I wish I had 'had' this one life drawing instructor for MY instructor back in college. He was so good and his stuff was so relaxed/natural.  And very recognizable likenesses of the subjects.  I remember seeing a fellow student's work in a college art show in my senior year and it was the same style and VERY nice.  I didn't recognize the name.

It turns out it was this surfer-looking dude I always assumed was a slacker-type. I didn't have him in hardly any of my classes.  Man, he sure absorbed that instruction well or was pretty durn good to begin with.  I was stunned.  Sort of Jeff Jones-looking approach and not stiff and comic book-y like my stuff.  SO much in the same style as the instructor and almost as good!!!  My Life Drawing instructor was from Greece and gave off a whole different vibe/wasn't as hands-on. I coulda been a contender!!  Well....maybe.

Doug, it's great to see your work again especially here in an unexpected place. You were always one of the most requested artists back in the InterFan days.  I look forward to seeing more old and new pieces from you.
You knew the job was dangerous when you took it, Fred.

Wow! I look at it and see a mix of Berni Wrightson and Jack Davis! Nice line work!

Nice ink work, curseofthewerewolf.

BTW, speaking of Bernie Wrightson, here's a quick one he did in my sketchbook a few years ago. I was sitting at my table at DragonCon when Bob Burden came over to introduce me to Bernie. I had been sketching, so on impulse I handed him my pencil and asked if he would scribble his name. He had an armload of books, which he positioned on his hip as he leaned sideways (muttering something like "I usually don't do this"). I not only got the scribbled name but a quick drawing to boot. After he left, Bob said, "you know, Dan, he never does that". Pretty cool.

Inkfink

Scribble... pppft. That's incredible!!!
