Truly, one of The Greats.

Got to meet Jack once, at the grand old Museum of Cartoon Art - the castle on the hill.

Softspoken guy, with a hint of a drawl... who told us he was kind of ashamed of his EC work - he thought they had gone too far.

Merriest,
-Craig W.

Oh, gosh, no!  They didn't go too far!  But they surely TOOK US far!  Inspiring, sparking imaginatiion, tickling humor, giving delight--and continuing to do so over decades!  Bless him.  Thanks for sharing that memory, Craig!

Diggin' up another old thread here, why start a new one there are so many forgotten topics!!  I had forgotten I had these two Tales from the Crypt books (from Random House, 1991) and just happened across them the other night whilst looking for something ghoulish to read to Josephyne!  As mentioned I only have two of these, vol. 1 & 2 but apparently there are 5 total.

Some great Jack Davis' covers on these!!

Boy, did this thread ever need to be bumped into the present! And I never even knew about those wild Tales from the Crypt books!

Here are scans of my two copies of Tales of the Crypt:

I had forgotten about those Tales from the Crypt books as well.  I had bought them for my son who was a wee lad back then.  I'm sure they are around here somewhere.

That's the spirit! Never too early to be introduced to EC horror comics!

Wow, some great stuff here. I missed out on Mr. Davis' monster hey-day, but I fondly recall his whacky (but still scary) monsters in late 70s Slim Jim ads. From there I recognized his work when I picked up MAD. I've been a fan ever since. And my kids dig Mad Monster Party, so he's got a lot of fans there, too!

The art of Jack Davis, and the vocal stylings of Hans Conreid.  What could be better?
What ever happened to my Transylvania Twist?

IDW is planning an Artist Edition book of Davis EC art (scanned from the original art and printed at same size) -- same format as their stunning Wally Wood book.  A MAD Artist Edition including Davis art is in the works as well.

The Topps Jack Davis Funny Valentines cards are one of the most beloved items in my collection. They're not scarce, they're not expensive, but I remember them in the schoolyard and the Jack Davis artwork is just too cool!

The first set was issued in 1959:

Here is a picture of the original art to one of the Funny Valentine cards that I've framed and have hanging in my comic room::

The Funny Valentines A set was issued in 1960:

The Giant Funny Valentines were issued in 1961 and then reissued in 1966. The 1961 cards have red-orange backs while the 1966 reissue has bright red backs. The 1966 reissue was also printed in both the U.S. and Canada. They're easy to differentiate because the U.S. version was printed on white card stock while the Canadian version was printed on grey card stock. The fine print on the back also tells you in which country the cards were printed.
