Another badly faded photo (I think these were from one of my cousins' Polaroids). Here is me (the littlest one), my brother Steve, and our cousin Dori on the swingset my Dad had put together in our backyard. That's all metal!

Of COURSE it's all metal!! Ready to rust, and none of those sissified plastic caps to protect you from the protruding bolts. It's a retro monument to tetanus!! HOT DAMN!!

And it DID rust, brother! I got many a scrape from that swingset, and the one to follow. Also, the metal link chains on the swings caught a finger and twisted them a time or two. It was such an adventure being a kid in those days. Mom always had the Bactine and Band-Aids ready. Of course, there was the occasional trip to the doctor for stitches too!  ;)

Karen, I love this swing picture.  I'm really grooving on all these pics of my UMA family.  I have a similar picture with me and my brother, even with the same type of fence.  Your swing set was way cooler.  Ours didn't come with a cute Blonde attachment. ;D

Scatter, your so right about the swings.  Back when a kid could still be a kid, and parents hadn't turned into wusses.

Karen, we survived all the scrapes and cuts and are all better for it as adults.  Bet you wouldn't change those memories for anything.

Just found this one, which I haven't seen for many years. I'm twelve years old, standing on stilts that my dad made for us. I'm wearing my Archie Bunker t-shirt! Those were the days...

Indeed. What was it though that turned parents into such wusses? Was it media sensationalism? Or was it simply baby boomer flower children having kids of their own?

???

Thanks for posting this Mike, you just brought up a forgotten memory for me.  My Granfather helped me make a pair of stilts.  Same year too, 1972.  Awesome photo Mike.

Moonshadow- Wow!!  You had the "deluxe" version of the swing set we had at our house!!  That slide platform looked super fun! I do remember that when the rust overtook our set, the glider was the first to go. Those things always seemed flimsy at the connecting points.  But the slide was always the last accessory standing, for some reason. But you guys sure look cute in your picture! You must have had fun parents or grandparents to understand the importance of a quality swingset  :)  Illoman- I would like to formally apply for a retroactive adoption into your family!  Stilts?? What?  I didn't know that laypersons could even own stilts! I would have enjoyed the 70s soooo much more if I had a pair of those sweet things. You have the best photos, hands down. I'm going to be obsessed with the thought of having stilts now! Maybe my dad will make me some now, if I ask him. But he'll probably just say "we'll see", which means "no".  haha!

My dad made us those stilts, and poster frames, bookcases, all kinds of stuff. He really enjoyed making things in his garage. I still have a bookcase he made me at least 35 years ago.

I really envy your relationship with your father Mike, our father never interacted with us. That was what my brother and toys were for.  I can remember seeing other fathers outside playing with their kids.

Cool pics Bill!! As we've discussed before, our dads were a lot alike.
