Any suggestions for cool places to go in Los Angeles??
« on: August 06, 2010, 04:38:52 PM »
I'm taking the family to Disneyland in 2 weeks and was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on any cool places  to go.  We went to Universal Studios last time we were in LA but probably won't go back.

Besides Disneyland, we're going to Meltdown Comics and Wacko/Soap Plant/La Luz De Jesus gallery.  It's a pretty low key trip.  Just 2 days.

Are there any good places for toys/models (vintage and new)?

Sorry for the boring topic.  Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions.

Thanks!
Jasen

There are a couple of pretty good ones here in the San Fernando Valley. In Burbank, there's Blast from the Past on Hollywood Way just south of Magnolia, and there is also Hallowe'en Town on Magnolia Blvd

Then OVER in Van Nuys

In Hollywood, Hollywood Toy & Costume, but less vintage there

Store has more than the online site does--actually it's more vintage than new.

Sweet!  Thank you so much for the suggestions!  I had forgotten about Blast from the Past.  I've never been to Halloween Town or Big Kid Collectibles.  I'll definitely check them out!

Thanks again!

Hallowe'en Town has a website too, but it is on the Northside of the Magnolia Street near Niagra

Do yourself a favor and go on the "VIP" studio tour at Warner Brothers. It takes the better part of a day, and is a great thing. You will see buildings, sets, costumes, and props you'll instantly recognize, and for years to come you will spot stuff in movies you are watching. You will be able to impress your friends (while watching movies) by saying stuff like 'Hey, this flick was shot at Warners'!' and mean it. You'll probably run into a production in progress and likely have lunch in the midst of working actors.  It's pricey, but was worth every penny, and if you want to see real old school working Hollywood, it's the place to go.

My boyfriend likes to go to Big Lou's Collectibles, 5413 Sepulveda Boulevard, Culver City (near Sony studios)

Great places to see:

Hollywood Heritage Museum (DeMille Lasky Barn) on Highland Avenue across from Hollywood Bowl.  Closed Mondays.

See a movie at the American Cinematheque on Hollywood Boulevard.  It's the old Graumans Egyptian and they have some neat movies old and new.

Check out Larry Edmunds Books also on that side of Hollywood Boulevard, though a few blocks to the east.

The Kodak Theater is where the Oscars are awarded.

The outdoor mall done in the style of the Babylon palace and Ishtar Gate in D. W. Griffith's Intolerance is worth a look see and go to the Johnny Rockets for lunch.  Tell em I sent ya.

Do you love Hollywood history?  See the Autry National Center and the museum there totally devoted to the West, including an extensive collection of material related to film.

There is so much more that I have written about for the magazines.  Oh, and if you like Lugosi I can give you a list of places to go where he lived and worked.  Chaney Sr. too.

Awesome.  This is so much more than I had hoped for. Thank you so much!

I had never heard of the VIP tour at Warner.  I'll have to look into that.

I may drop by the Hollywood Cemetery and say "hi" to Johnny Ramone, as well.

It should be a fun (even more fun) trip, thanks to you guys.

Thanks again!

I just looked at a site with reviews of the Warners' VIP tour. There is a $45 tour and a $195 tour. We went on the $195 tour, which is over 5 hours long, and you get lunch at the Warners' commissary. I have read some somewhat negative reviews of the $45 tour (which some reviewers called "pricey" and "not worth it"), which I can't speak for, as I didn't go on it.  I'm not sure how they figure forty five bucks is pricey nowadays, but in general the $195 VIP is rated much higher. We went on the $195 VIP and loved it. We still talk about it. Not cheap, but how often do you do stuff like this, and my daughter (who was about 12/13 at the time) was mesmorized by the place. Lots of props and stuff for Harry Potter fans, BTW, and you get to go into several working departments. I really liked the art and prop/costume departments, and we got to see several artists and employees working on projects first hand, which was pretty fascinating.  Universal has a VIP tour also, but I hear Warners is better and more satisfying.

That sound great.  A bit pricey but it seems pretty cool.

Thanks again!
