You Be the Director

Wolf Man

As I just finished up with watching Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man I was thinking of all the little things I would have done different to make the film better ( I know it is blasphemy but we all think it sometimes).

So here is your chance.  Tell us all what you would do to change your favorite movie to slightly tweak it and make it better.

Inquiring minds want to know.

I have to be careful, this is my second favorite Frankenstein flick, however, I would trim the Larry Talbot scenes in the hospital to add some more fight at the end.  I want a battle royale, not a couple swipes and a flood.

I love Lagosi don't get me wrong, I have a number of his movies in my collection.  But if I was directing Frankenstein meets The Wolfman, then you would all have seen the great Boris Karloff as the Monster. The movie would also have been just a little longer to incorporate more individual Monster footage, more Wolfman footage, and a longer monster battle scene.

The Spangler

I would have left at least some of the Monster's dialogue intact.  I realize that at the time, test audiences roared with laughter at a Frankenstein monster with a Hungarian accent, but after all, it was Ygor's (Lugosi) brain transplanted into the monsters skull at the end of "Ghost of Frankenstein", and we heard Lugosi's voice dubbed over as he went blind.  It would have made some scenes in "F meets W" less confusing, and would have explained the Monster's obvious regaining sight scene at the end.

One major change if I was directing the Universal classics would be: Me whining to the studio heads to make a sequel to the Wolfman. I always thought it kind of sad that the Wolfman never had a solo sequel like all the others did.

Wolf Man

I would have put the singing at the wine festival in the background and would not have shown Talbot as a raving lunatic in the scene.  I also would have had him explain in dialogue to the Baroness that he needed the Diary because he was ill and felt the secrets contained would bring him peace.

I too would have extened the fight scene and using Universal's theory of no clear winner I would have shown each one having moments of getting the upper hand as well as having more spectacular fight moves.  Of, course, being more of a Wolf Man fan if I really could I would have had him clearly winning before being killed by the water.

As for a sequel to the Wolf Man, this was supposed to be the sequel as he was predominant in the film but Universal also used this a seguay into merging the monsters into films together.  I like the idea though and would love to hear a synopsis of what storyline the Wolf Man sequel would have?

If you could be the director for any of the other Classic films what else would you change?  I want to hear more from big fans of the other films too.

I would have had the Wolf Man in A&C Meet Frank grab Dracula just before the change into a bat actually surprising Dracula and have both bodies fall into the water.  I also would have liked to see more grapling in the fight between them.

Well, I WOULDN'T go with the story in the novel WOLF MAN: HUNTER'S MOON.  I suppose my sequel would have started with Larry's body being shipped to the states for burial; his mother's family was closer to him than his father was.  Because rumors circulate the Larry was beaten to death by Sir John, they demand an autpsy be conducted, and in the process Larry Talbot is revived AND one of the three morgue attendants survives to become a werewolf himself.

Eventually the story would have ended with the two wolf men attacking each other on a hillside in a storm, and the lady park ranger tried to help Larry earlier in the movie shoots them both with silver bullets.

Something like that, I imagine, though it would also mean a MAJOR rewrite for FMTWM.

It isn't my favorite movie but I always thought that if Universal wanted me to remake any movie it would be The Creature Walks Among Us. The movie lost it's way in the series. It started off good and then just turned into a love triange movie with the Creature as a background prop. If they told me to do it today, this is how it would be. First, forget the original was ever made. I would bring it up to modern day and get Julia Adams to reprise her role as Kay. She would be a widow of Richard Carlsons character and their son is an oceanographer. The movie would start in black and white and show the scene from Revenge where the Creature throws the guy trying to help the girl at the tree and then continue to the end of Revenge as sort of a reminder of what has happened. The screen fades to darkness. The next image you see is in color and is a news anchorman on a local tv station reporting a sighting of a large strange creature spotted in the ocean. (The story takes place in San Francisco BTW)  Kay was watching the broadcast and her son stops by for a visit. She calls him to the living room tv to watch the unfolding story and see an ariel picture of the mysterious Creature. Of course for Kay, she sees  the picture of the Creature and it is all too familiar to her.......
What do you think about that? Not bad for an amatuer.
