I was really glad to see this win. It really is a surreal piece of work. If you try to watch it as a typical film with plot, storyline, characterization, etc. you will miss it. If you approach it as a piece of art on film, a "moving painting", you will be richly rewarded.

I completely agree, Mike!

The Birds Barbie Rondo is a disappointment.  It's not even an original idea.  Madame Alexander planned a similar doll a few years ago, but pulled it (or did they finally release it?).  David Colton liked that it was a real toy and not a garage kit, but even here it fails.  This is just as much an "adult collector's piece" as any Sideshow premium format statue.  Little girls are not going to buy it, open it and play with it.  I'm sure those birds would get ruined in 10 minutes.

All that being said, I support the idea of giving the Rondo to a "real toy" mass-produced for children instead of a fancy, expensive display item made in limited numbers for adults.  But we didn't see anything like that in 2008.  I doubt we'll see anything like it in 2009.  Kids don't want this stuff!

I'm happy that Svengoolie won.  Grew up watching him and still watch him to this day.  One of the greats.

How about King Kong Barbie?

...by the way - I LOVE my Birds Barbie! so there's no blood?? who cares - it was my best birthday gift EVER!! and I even just had Tippy autograph it at Chiller. Hitchcock was about glamor and horror and this was a terrific choice - I hope they do a whole Barbie series - including Grace Kelly, Kim Novac, Ingrid Bergman and even Teresa Wright...and let's not forget the immortal Janet Leigh -- dripping in "chocolate blood"?!   ;)
