How can I forget Peter Jackson's King Kong? That was an excellent remake and a great film.
Listen to them. Children of the Night. What music they make!

I'm not much on re-makes but I too agree on John Carpenter's THE THING.  It does stand on it's own.   I enjoyed both Bram Stoker's DRACULA (Even though it has Keauno Reeves) and Mary Shelly's FRANKENSTEIN.  Both were outstanding, in my humble opinion, because of their bringing the original novels to life.

The Thing  is awesome!  I really liked The Fly, Dawn of the Dead, Bram Stokers Dracula, Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, and King Kong.  I thought they were pretty good.
Long live the UMA!

I am a Living Dead Romero purist but I thoroughly enjoyed the Dawn remake. The opening credits sequence alone is gold (When The Man Comes Around, just chilling)...
Savini's NOTLD is actually one of my favorites, and is very underrated. He should've done more like it.
Very much liked Coppola's Dracula, not so much Branagh's Frankenstein (didn't hate it, just sort of 'eh'). But I never really consider a Dracula or Frankenstein film a 'remake' anymore... there are so many of them over these long years that it's more like another piece of the continuum than a remake.

I Thought That Psyco was a Good Remake
John Woodcox

I think Gus Van Sant's Psycho would have been a good film if it had stood alone, that is, if there had never been a Psycho film before. On its own it is an interesting film.
But the problem is, the story is so dependent upon character that the casting, heck the writing, requires a certain age group to come off right.
In the original, every character (except for Norman, quite purposely) is at an age where they feel they are just past their prime; it's the motivation for much of their actions and choices.
But if you populate your film with 30-somethings, you lose the motivation and character which distinguished the original story from the resulting rip-offs... it loses it's heart, so to speak.
Just my opinion of course, but I think it's an interesting film, but a failed remake.

I also left out Savini's NOTLD which I enjoyed very much. I also liked the new Dawn of the Dead as well.

I agree Mike C, new Drac and Frank movies are additions to the continuity, Coppola's Dracula is one of my favorites, Branagh's Frankenstein was OK.

Carpenter's The Thing is also one of my favorites.
"For one who has lived but a single lifetime, you are a wise man ...Van Helsing."
"I shall awaken memories of love and crime and death..."
