Cleinman Monster Rings

Cleinman made higher quality toy rings in the 60's and into the 70's. Many toymakers commissioned Cleinman to make rings to fit into their toy line, or bought existing Cleinman rings to use. Mattel made use of Cleinman rings for their Barbie line, and a Cleinman ring was used in the Uncle Fester Mystery Light Bulb toy, as they needed something in the hand to complete the circuit and cause the light to illuminate. The big metal Uncle Creepy and Cousin Eerie rings are not marked Cleinman, but not all of their rings are, and they were probably made by Cleinman, as the style of manufacturing is consistent with Cleinman rings.

Many years ago, before the internet, in the days of Toy Shop, I became friends with Joe Statkus, who is probably the most knowledgable toy ring guy out there. Joe has handled thousands of toy rings, and especially the rings of the 60's forward, after the radio premium ring era. Joe landed this Cleinman carded set and has filled in other monster rings Cleinman made, so that he put together a group of the carded set and 3 loose rings.  The carded set is something neither of us has seen before. It was open on the side, but the rings are correct. One is the same ring used in the Fester Light Bulb set. My monster ring collection is important to me. Not sure any other monster collectors collect monster rings to the extent I do, and there are a few I still need.  Others always come up that I never knew about.

Also, the Fester piece came with rings that had red rhinestone eyes, and some that did not. Both are correct. If one of these rings in the Fester toy does not have eyes in it, that does not mean they were lost from it.

Wow those are sweet! Love the card art on the rings and the box art on Fester's mystery light too!
Crazy am I? We'll see if I'm crazy or not!

So that's how the light bulb works! I always figured there was just a switch on the end that you pushed with your tongue.

Nice card art! I usually like the cards better than the stuff on them.

You're right! Those rings are nice! They certainly are a cut above other rings made during this time period.

I know this is an old thread. When I bought my Uncle Fester Mystery Light bulb recently, it came with the original Kent AA battery, but of course it's missing the ring. Does anyone know where I can acquire the correct Cleinman monster ring in order to complete this..? I would be willing to pay top dollar for one. Thanks. The picture of the five rings with the Uncle Fester ring in the middle is the one I need...with or without the rhinestones. I found the ring second from the left on Etsy for $8, but it's not the correct one for this toy.

Already sold and looks like for $150

It says, "Best offer accepted", so it was less than that.

I finally got a Cleinman & Sons monster ring for my Uncle Fester Light Bulb. Mine has the rhinstone eyes, and I'm sure glad to have found one.
The original miniature bulb was burned out that goes inside the larger bulb. Of course no one makes them anymore. I found a 1.5v bulb with a 5mm base that should fit, but it won't arrive from China until next week. Getting the Uncle Fester Mystery Light Bulb to light will complete this.

There were two versions of Uncle Festers Mystery Light Bulb toy in the 60's. The one I have is the one that came out in 1965, (sold for $1.98). It includes the bulb, the monster ring, and foil strips. The other one came out in 1967, and it has just the bulb and a AA Kent battery. No ring or foil was needed, as the bulb had a tab on it you could simply press to make the connection.

Yay! Great stuff. The ring is fabulous in and of itself not to mention its multi-functionality.
