Sylvester, our Cat...aka "Moomies"

Sylvester had an interesting story. At birth, he and his entire litter were shoved in a garbage bag and thrown on the side of the road to die..... by some truly heartless humans. The locale they chose for this wickedness was the country. They were pitched from the window of a moving car. A friend of my Mother in law lived in the area.

She had a barn cat that had just had a litter on her farm. The barn cat lost some of her litter. She heard the mewing from the garbage bag of 2 survivors from the incident. One cat, later to be named Garfield. Along with him,a little long hair mutt that we would adopt named Sylvester. Or, as my son...who was 4 at the time declared, "Moomies". The Moomies name stuck.

The barn cat pulled these two survivors out of the trash bag, tearing it open with her teeth. She put them with her litter and nursed them. Once weaned, Moomies lived a great life with us. For 15 years.

Sadly, he developed liver disease. We started noticing him moving slower and having difficulties late last year. He was also having trouble holding his head up all the way. But he loved eating. I told my wife: "As long as our boy continues to purr away and enjoys eating, we will do what we can to keep him with us." Then his appetite faded and he went form 30 lbs to 13 seemingly overnight.  We kept him going with shots and pills for two more weeks. He couldn't eat. He would make his way to the refrigerator and wait for something to be dropped out for him, but he wouldn't touch it. No more joy in eating. No more joy in anything. He was ready to go. We were with him when he did. Purring and knocking my head up with his hand to be petted and have his ears scratched. As if to let US know, he was tired and it was ok.

Not ashamed to say the wife and I have cried like babies since we lost him.

He was a good kitty.

What a touching tribute! I know how you feel, Richard. We've been thru a similar loss recently. It sure looks like Moomie get a lot of love. Please pm me anytime you need to talk.

He had such a great life you. That's the main thing. He was a magnificent looking fluff ball.

It's always tough when you lose a four legged furry pal. Hell, they are a member of your family. My wife and I were cat rescuers for 30 years and I've been there 13 times and it never gets easier. Break out a few pictures and talk with your wife about all the fun and funny stories about him. Sorry for your loss.
Take care.

So sorry to hear about dear Sylvester's passing.  I fully understand the relationship and the pain.

Condolences to you and your family..our pets become part of our family the same way any human members do and to lose one is a heartbreaking experience just as sad as if they were human. The wonderful thing is that you gave him such a great life for all those years and stuck with him til the end. I'm sure he knew he was loved.

I had my last cat for 19 years when he finally passed away, although I miss him terribly, I'm happy that he always enjoyed a loving home.

My condolences on the loss of your fur baby, Anton. It is always so hard.  They are part of our families and give us their unconditional love.  It is good to know you have him a good life.

So sorry for your loss. Hugs and sincere condolences to you and your family.  Just minutes before reading this,my husband and I were talking about our cats who crossed the Rainbow Bridge.  Now my guys are on the couch with me, wondering why I'm crying.

Computer and other issues .. I don't post as much anywhere but try to check in most days.

How is the black cat doing?

When our guys died, a few good friends made small contributions in their names to animal rescues, it touched our hearts and helped us heal.  Every note and/or card of condolence meant so much .. at every passing, so I try to pay it forward.

Please continue to post about Sylvester and share his life with us as you see fit.

Charcoal is doing ok. She mopes a lot and looked for him the first couple of nights he was gone. I had a good friend donate to the ASPCA in Moomies name so I know what you mean about other folks's kind gestures.  And will do on Sylvester.

Oh very sad! I was so overwrought with grief myself the first time I had that experience with my little grey female Spike in 1991 that I had a long trail of snot hanging from my nose at the vet's office.

:(

Collecting! It's what I do!

I hear ya, Hep. We cried like babies knowing he was suffering. It was heartbreaking. I made him a nice grave with decorative stepping and landscaping stones. He will rest in peace.  :'(
