Recreating Drive-In Horror Movie Night

On Sept. 5th, 1981, a local Chicago drive-in theater - the Bel-Air - had a quintuple horror movie night. The line-up included:


Night of the Living Dead
Last House On The Left Pt. 2 (aka Bay of Blood)
Massacre At Central High
The Rats Are Coming, The Werewolves Are Here
The Flesh Grinders (aka The Corpse Grinders)


I went to see them with my best friend from high school (I was a sophomore at the time) and my uncle who was only about 8 years older than us. We were all horror fans. Ordered pizza, sodas, and snacks and had a great night watching movies almost until sun-up!


So now every year I sort of celebrate or recreate that fond memory - I play all the movies back to back, pop in some Drive In Classics DVDs in between the movies to watch the intermission cartoons and ads, pop in a pizza and grab some snacks. Always a great night! Here is an ad from the newspaper advertising it:

That is a great idea I've thought of doing too. My dad took one of my sisters and I to a drive-in in 1962. It was also 4 features. We had seen previews the week before and I begged my dad to take us.

I'll never forget the lineup:

FIRE MAIDENS OF OUTER SPACE
THE MOLE PEOPLE
THE DEADLY MANTIS
THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF

One night I will do it.

I was 7 at the time and loved the films, but THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF scared the crap outta me right from the start. I think I made it as far as the dog getting shot, but then fell asleep. Of course years later, it became one of my favorite werewolf films.

That 4 movie line up sounds awesome! Curse of the Werewolf is one of my earliest viewed and favorite werewolf movies as well. He looks so feral in that movie, a lot scarier than the Universal version.
