This is the first American film from the director of "Oldboy"

In that sense, it is quite good. It doesn't look like they dumbed his style for broader appeal.

The main girl, Mia Wasilowska (sp?) is very engaging.

They really got the mood and tone right with this one. There were times when I felt I was watching an adaptation of a Joyce Carol Oates Southern Gothic story.

The revelation however of the back story on the main villian was old old old even in the 1950s when this plot device was used a lot.

Nonetheless, Matthew Goode as the creepy Uncle Charlie (nod to "Shadow of a Doubt" here) is very effective. This is his best role since "The Lookout" in 2007, which I thought was one of the years best films.

So, in summation--"Oldboy" it ain't. But it has style to burn, and will be better than anything else you'll see in the multiplex this weekend.

Thanks for the heads-up, mjaycox. I was kinda on the fence on this one, so your input is appreciated.
