Weren't the first two direct-to-video releases? Why release Part 3 in theaters?

I believe both films had a limited theatrical release!

Spring 2007 for the first film with a dvd release of winter 2007.  Fall 2010 for Hatchet II with a dvd release of winter (Jan/Feb) 2011!
