To be clear, Rickles is funny, that's why he has had longevity. Personally, he's never been one of my favorites, but give him his due.

People get offended easily. There are many other things that are offensive, his jokes are not.
"For one who has lived but a single lifetime, you are a wise man ...Van Helsing."
"I shall awaken memories of love and crime and death..."

I'm a lifelong Rickles fan and have been luckey enough to see him live a couple of times back in the day. In high school, my best buddy and I travelled to Reno to see him perform. My friend, Ray, was also a big Rickles fan. We tipped the maitre d and got in the front row.  I was hoping that Rickles would go off on me, while Ray is one who avoids the spotlight at all costs. Rickles hadn't been on stage for ten minutes and he zeroed in on Ray like a shark on blood. It was amazing how he could sense exactly who was the best target. When he asked his name and Ray bumbled and stumbled to get out "Uuuh, ahem, uuh, R-r-ay," that was it. The attack began and he kept going back to him over and over. I won't go into detail , but it was hilarious.
On another occasion, we saw him and sent a note backstage. At the conclusion of the show, Rickles invited us up on stage. Great memories fromone of my all time favorites.
