It's Frightday the first and this month belongs to Quasimodo the Bellringer, one of the
scariest-looking characters from the 1966 Calendar >

It's said to have been developed using makeup elements originally created for
1957's "Man of a Thousand Faces" >

From the mid 1960s to mid '70s, Hunchbacks were available everywhere fine monster masks were sold >

They were occasionally incorporated onto wax museum figures as well >

I scored my first set around 1972, headmask plus matching hands >

A few years later, another joined my collection >

It fit well enough and I liked its swarthy complexion but thought
the production hairwork needed improvement >

Post Studios agreed to fix it up with a wild new coiffure >

I was one happy Hunchback that Halloween!

Into the 1980s, I met other collectors who owned vintage DP Hunchback masks.
These four are among the oldest and best >

Years later, DP's "Calendar reissue" series was to be the Hunchback's last hurrah.
Due to licensing complications, it was the final character to enter production in late 1999 >

Today I have five copies of the Calendar Hunchback, three reissues and two original versions,
but only one pair of vintage hands left >

I even have a pair of Hunchback feet >

There are many other Hunchback masks to cover this month
so start posting pics of yours. The starting bell has rung!

This is easily my favorite!  Looks just like Cagney in the movie! :)

I couldn't resist:

Capt. Ed Hocken: Frank, I know you got Sally's arrest record from R & I  but how did you ever figure out she was the one behind the loan office heist?

Det. Frank Drebin: Just a little hunch back at the office.

Capt. Ed Hocken: I thought so. Because I brought that little hunchback with me. Charlie, come out here!

Det. Frank Drebin: Charlie! Thanks for the tip.

Thanks again Sir Masksalot for the great backstory on this Don Post classic. This is a copy of "The Hunchback" that I recently received back from Rob and Cathy Tharp. He's again just beautifully finished.  The Grotesque Bell Ringer has always been one of my favorite masks in the Don Post series.
