Elvis Presley slipped into eternity 33 years ago tomorrow at about 9AM. Strip away the caricatures and half-truths and outright lies, and you still have a warm and generous and flawed human being who changed the world of music and popular culture forever............along with the most powerful modern embodiment of "Too much, too soon" tragedy. A truly fascinating and compelling man and life and gift.

One of the most charismatic performers of all time. A shame he left us so young.

I remember being at work--my first job when the news came interrupting the baseball game which we had on. All of the women who worked there started crying. I've never been a giant fan, nor do I dislike him or his music, but definitely remember feeling numb.

I can recall being at home when I heard the news. Even though Mom and Dad were not big Elvis fans (Mom was more of a Tom Jones woman), they both seemed fairly shook up by his death. Years later, as a teen, I read a number of books on Elvis and really grew to appreciate him. I realize he was younger than I am now when he died -that just blows my mind. Way too young to die.

By the way Scatter, been meaning to ask: was Jordan named for the Jordanaires?

I remember being with my family on vacation when I heard the news.

As big an EP fan as I am, you know I never made that connection. Maybe it was all subliminal?? Nancy wanted to name him Seth, but I wasn't crazy about it. But she can pretty much get me to agree to anything (those big brown eyes do me in every time) so I went along.

Well, while she was in labor I had second thoughts and told her I was changing his name because she had already named Justine. She was in so much pain she didn't care..........she just wanted him OUT.

So I named him Jordan and to this day she hates me for waiting until she was in labor to get what I wanted ;D

You're only discovering this NOW??  :o

I never quite realized the depths of your depravity until now! Poor Nancy! :'(

I remember hearing about Elvis' death on the radio. I was 22 and driving a delivery truck for an electronics wholesaler.  The news story put his age as 42, and I thought to myself, "figures--he was an old has-been."  I was never really much into his music.
The older I got, the more I appreciated his music.  (Still don't think much of his movies, though.)

As I approached 40, I realized Elvis was really not an old has-been-- he was pretty young.  When I turned 42, I knew Elvis died way too young!
Now, having left 42 way behind, it seems he was awfully young

Whenever I feel tired and burned out, I just remind myself that when Elvis was my age, he had been dead for 13 years, so maybe I'm not in so bad a shape.  ::)

In my own personal little 50s rockabilly world, we call those Elvis years.

Huge, huge Presley fan myself.

RIP EAP.

Ah, we are even more kindred spirits than I knew. Did you ever get to see Elvis in concert Bob??

R.I.P..........I remember exactly what I was doing when Elvis Presley died,
and I had a chance to see him perform in Las Vegas. But, it never happened, and
it was too late. I was so deeply sad when Mr. Presley passed away. He definitely
was an Amazing performer, to the maximum.
