THANKS MONSTER FOR SALE!!

I wonder why  they included  some of the A/C comedys but left out
some of universals mystery films ?    Surley some more of the
CRIME CLUB  series should have been included.

They said they were trying to include all the movies that had some small amount of horror/supernatural content.

It is not a perfect book.  (No book ever is.) But I consider it the primary resource for the classic Universal horror films.

I wish they would do something similar for the Universal-International science fiction films of the 50's.

HI Adam,

Thanks Again.

I was compiling my own list from memory (I collect 16mm films)
and  I could only come up with about 70+  starting in 1931 Dracula
and If I included ALL the universal Holmes films and Crime Club series
this gave me a count of about 90 films  so I was wondering which ones
the "experts" thought were the diffenitive list

I too would like to see  them do a series  of there 50's U-I work
and  Uni's other  crime films of the 30's and 40's  like "EYE's of the UNDERWORLD"  and  ARMOURED CAR   ect.

Steve Kronenberg and Tom Weaver are working on "Universal Horrors II", which covers the horror and sci-fi movies of the 1950s. And if you want more '50s sci-fi than just Universal, there's Bill Warren's "Keep Watching The Skies!"

That's GREAT news.  I can't wait for the "Universal Horrors II" book!

I will check out the other book as well.

There's a revised ed. of "Keep Watching The Skies!" coming out, uh, soon-ish. Keep an eye on the McFarland website for that and UHII.

Even better news!

One Amazon reviewer of the "Skies" book noted that Volume One of the set was much thinner than Volume Two.  He atributed this to the fact that V1 was written pre-VCR and V2 was written after - so the author had been unable to personally view all of the films listed.

Whatever, I am sure that such detailed books on films. many of which are rather onscure, will benefit from updated facts/opnions.

Hope the next editions are issued in hardcover and sell for less than the expensive out-of-print earlier editions.

V1 (covering 1950-1957) was pubed in '82 and V2 (1958-1962) came out in '86. I think there was also more movies (though not twice as many) in the latter period and there were corrections to the first vol.

The book currently available is a paperback that combines the two original vols. I imagine the revised ed. will probably be a paperback, too.

It sounds like a neat book, but it sucks that it only goes up to 1946. Creature from the Black Lagoon is one of the classic monsters, but he didn't come along until 1954, but he should not be ommitted from anything involving Universal Classic Monsters.
Listen to them. Children of the Night. What music they make!

They're working on a sequel to UH that covers the '50s, but I don't know when it will be out.
