Gary Brooker the founder and front man of Procol Harum died of cancer at his home in Surrey, England this past weekend at the age of 76. Procol Harum's 1967 release of A Whiter Shade of Pale was like nothing released beforehand and thus acted to raise the bar for rock music. It's still widely regarded as one of the very best pop music releases of all time.

Here are a few selected tracks from Brooker's discography:

Poison Ivy - Paramounts

A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum

A Salty Dog - Procol Harum

The Devil Came from Kansas - Procol Harum

Whiskey Train - Procol Harum

Conquistador - Procol Harum

Grand Hotel - Procol Harum

"Conquistador" got a lot of airplay when it first came out. I hadn't heard it in decades until just now.
Thanks for the links, Hepcat. I only have one album of theirs, "Procol's Ninth", but it's due for another
listen. They had a distinctive sound and did their own thing in the midst of a tumultuous period in music.

Darn. Sad news. I had the live album with Conquistador. That was an amazing concert. He had a great voice. RIP Gary.

News reports stated that he passed after he turned a whiter shade of pale.

Still to this day A Salty Dog is one of my favorite albums and something of a forgotten Gem IMO
RIP Gary (May 16 Vestal virgins lead you on your way)
