R.I.P. Spencer Davis (17 July 1939 – 19 October 2020)

Spencer Davis, one of the leading lights of the British Invasion, passed away earlier this week while being treated for pneumonia:



Born in Swansea, Wales in 1939, Spencer Davis began working as a musician while he was a student at the University of Birmingham. Davis played the guitar, harmonica and the accordion. Influenced by the burgeoning British blues and skiffle scenes, he performed in bands with future stars such as Bill Wyman and Christine Perfect.

He formed the Spencer Davis Group in 1963 with fifteen year old Steve Winwood on keyboards and guitar, Steve's brother Muff Winwood on bass and Pete York on drums. Together with playing the guitar and harmonica, Davis shared vocals with Steve Winwood. The group went on to tour with the Rolling Stones and the Who.
