It's really odd that Disney, which now owns Lucasfilm and essentially calls the shots there, hasn't just given into the fans and released the original version.  Yes, they'd likely have to do restoration on the film elements, but still...the fans would buy it.

Supposedly, George Lucas put in the contracts, when he sold it to them, that they'd NEVER be allowed to do this.

Doh!

The Special Editions fill me with nerd rage!! I do own the older, unaltered DVDs, but it sucks that even back then, they were letterboxed. At least Spielberg had the good sense to allow fans to still own the original E.T., guns and all. Wish he'd have a heart-to-heart with his buddy George.

Yeah, Lucas apparently doesn't care what the fans think or want.

Guess we're lucky that we live in an age where fans with computer skills can take what he did give us and alter them so they are as close to getting the original films restored to the way they looked and sounded way back when.

All I can say about the Special Editions (and their more recent changes) is..."Maklunkey!  Oh, and "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..."
