Forums vs Facebook

I loathe Facebook, but in the last few months I've been forced to go there just to keep up with family and friends. Facebook is 10 miles wide and a micron deep. You can stay in touch but you can't form real relationships. A forum allows for far more substantive communication.

Thank God for General Terry and the UMA!!
We're all here because we're not all there.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! And for the kind words of support too! Your input helped solidify my thoughts on the matter which echo all of yours.

I'm a college student going on 23 years old, and I hate Facebook. I do not have one and I refuse to get one. Forums are where it's at for me. I hate the rationale that I have to do it because everyone else is doing it. It's just not my thing, too much crap happens there, and I'm not going to get one. My sister thinks I'm just being a contrarian, but honestly, online profiles of any kind never really appealed to me. I don't even usually fill out my forum profiles very much, just because if I want to share my likes, dislikes, or other personal information, I'd rather do so through conversation than just holding up a billboard with a bunch of stuff written on it.

I love Facebook for the ability to keep up with family half way cross the country to half cross the world, something that would never happen otherwise. Add to the bonus of a lot of very interesting groups that you can pick and choose thru, forums and Facebook can and will coexist. I enjoy twitter during my ballgames being able to chat with both fans and media in real time, a fun companion to the fan

Facebook is great for keeping in touch with family and old friends over long distances.

The UMA is a hang out. I keep coming back here for monster goodness and friendship.

Please keep the forum General.

The Batman

I enjoy facebook to see tons of costume event photos.
Often they make my photo their profile pic.
Having over 200 friends on it makes me view it once a day.
But cool forums like this one are a special treat.
cheers  8) :D

I don't use facebook , my space , etc, none of the social network stuff, they are great for family online get togethers, events, or even business but I much prefer the forum as a means of communication with fellow hobbyist & film enthusiasts, usually a nicer group of people on the forums for these types of interests.

I was not wanting to join FB for the longest time, but finally joined this past November.  It's pretty addictive, and I've noticed my usual internet browsing is less diverse and more pointed towards checking FB.  Insidious!  ;)  But I'm a message board kind of guy I guess, and prefer this 'long form' than the haiku style of Facebook.  There can be substantive exchanges there, but UMA is a great place and getaway for our special interests.

One way of finding stuff on FB that I've noticed, if you like something, you can look back through your 'Activity' button on the upper right of your personal page and find that thing you liked but is now long down the road on your home page.  Anyway, not really for or against FB anymore -- it is what it is.  This place is fine as it is.

Spacebook and My Face have eluded me due to a tendency to avoid the mainstream, and just generally not giving a rat's patoot. However, I do enjoy coming here and cyberly basking in the weirdness. Cheers, UMA.

I usually go overt to Facebook, after I come to UMA.  One place I also used to like to go to was "Haunt Space", until they spoiled it by trying to be a Facebook Clone.  Facebook is fine for reaching family and friends, but I like UMA just the way it is.
