Does anybody know what the black beanie hat that Lon Sr. wears (to hold the mask on his face)  in the phantom of the opera is called??  I tried searching for what type of hat it is and what kind of people used it. Or was it just created for the phantom character to wear in the film?

I think it was actually some type of Middle Eastern skullcap, similar to a yarmulke.
