What about it do you question?

I guess my question has been answered?  I just felt the box could have been a repro? Reproductions are so readily
available and produced these days. I myself bought a what-I-thought-was....an original card. To my surprise, I was wrong. That was my
mistake. No master how we may be experts, or have knowledge of our toys/collectibles. We can still fall victim to
fake items.

...and then there's that "no returns" thing on ebay. Always makes me flighty. Obviously you could fight a fake, but...

Actually, as these things go, (buying vintage things/antiques), EBay is pretty safe. An item not as described can be refunded.

Yeah, I know, but it's all so bizarre. NO returns, and yet often the seller has absolutely no idea what they are selling, how to describe it, what it is worth, or even if it's authentic or not. But don't you dare return it!  :P

I wonder if the seller had any idea he would get $1,913 for this, and over $400 for his Mego Mummy.

Yes, he knew exactly what he had. I know him and he is a member of the megomuseum.

If the box itself is so RARE, how does one know the authenticity?  It would be impossible to compare the box.
Unless, the owner absolutely  had the item since the item was produced?   I have seen in my travels the best-
of-best in FAKE card/box items. From REMCO to MEGO to KENNER repros.  I have also been fooled.
Also....it is not always the owners fault.

Contrary to popular belief, it is actually not hardto spot a fake box if you know what to look for. Even good ones. Superb ones. They can all be spotted without too much difficulty. But it is hard to tell in an auction. You need the item in hand.

It's like with art pottery-- it takes 2 secs to spot a fake in hand, but hard in pics alone. That's why I like EBay. Because no matter how many times the seller says "caveat emptor", if the item is not what it is purported, you are covered.

As for the authenticity of this box-- it comes down to provenance. Anything this rare changes hands only a few times in life. You can usually trace back to original owner. That is why the Alton Rubber Frank's authenticity came into suspicion-- no such tracing back could take place. It was very murky.
