What is this Computer Virus stuff I'm just hearing about and how do i stop it or find out if I have it?

Basically a year ago, the FBI busted a ring of hackers. They infected a ton of computers with Malware. When they busted them, the FBI was going to shut down their servers, but found that the Malware would make the computers shut down, so they left them up until a selected date (today).
